Chateau Rayas '78 - The Blog

To lunch with 2 great friends.  Costas and myself started collecting wine way back and indeed bought our first ever proper case of wine (Margaux 1983) together when we were both starting off our careers.  Somewhere along the line I managed to convince him (and myself) to buy some 1978 Rayas.  Even in those days it was expensive for Chateauneuf but nothing like today.  We started lunch off with Groffier Bonnes Mares 2005 which is an absolute delight to drink even now.  Of course it will get better but already I have drunk my way through the best part of a case (96).

The last time I saw the 1978 Rayas was at my house in Hampshire where I stupidly offered two of my best friends any wine they liked.  What did they pick?  Rayas from 1978 and 1990.  My last two bottles of both and a schoolboy error.

Tony, who was partially responsible for drinking those two last bottles, joined us again at 5 Hertford Street and Costas brought a bottle of the 1978.  Truly magnificent.  Well stored and lovingly looked after, it is as close to perfection as you can get (98+).  Great way to start the weekend.  The good news is that he has 3 more bottles...
