Today’s first release is the excellent Branaire Ducru at GBP 465, a St Julien of great finesse and quality which in 2016 has reached serious new heights. With the 2010 currently trading at over GBP 550 and the 2005 at GBP 650, not to mention coming in right at the bottom of our predicted spread, the price looks eminently sensible.

Always one of the most classically structured wines of the Left Bank, in 2016 Branaire has shown it is capable of adding layers of rich expression to its linear, pure, authentic terroir character. On tasting the wine back in April it was clear that the acidity was already beautifully integrated and the tannins had attained a level of ripeness and finesse that have added a statuesque grace to this superb claret which always boasts true vineyard character. In combination, these factors give this Branaire that essential 2016 attribute: energy. Highly recommended.
