Bordeaux En Primeur Begins - First Releases

With expectations of a late campaign we were all taken rather by surprise at the rapid start to the 2017 Bordeaux En Primeur campaign – which came with the release of Chateau Palmer. At GDP 2350 it’s not the undisputed bargain of the century but it falls right in the middle of our spread, and represents a 17% discount from our release price for the brilliant 2016 (if these levels were maintained through the campaign there would be some definite must-haves). There are physical vintages of Palmer in the market under this price, albeit not the grandest on record, and it is worth remembering that Palmer now is a very different animal to the Palmer of 10 or 15 years ago. The vineyards can rarely have been lavished with such attention and under Thomas Duroux the whole winegrowing process is at a very different level to the vintages of the mid-2000s.

The fine baby-Palmer Alter Ego is also available at GBP 585.

We’ve also seen a handful of Sauternes and the ‘garagiste’ Valandraud released at GBP 1200, a significant reduction from the 2016 price.
