Tasting Notes and Scores

Wine Advocate

This estate has undergone a complete transformation under the inspired proprietress, Chiara Boschis. The 1997 is a gorgeous wine, but, unfortunately, very little was produced (about 13,000 bottles). Aged in 100% new barriques, and bottled with neither fining nor filtration, it is a full-bodied, rich, structured, garnet/ruby-colored effort offering an emerging bouquet of rose petals, cherries, leather, spice box, and tobacco. Powerful, concentrated, pure, dense, and moderately tannic, it is not as flashy and precocious as many of its peers, but is unquestionably a classic. Anticipated maturity: 2005-2020.

Dark ruby-garnet. Superfresh plum, peach and berry on the nose. Full-bodied, with juicy, yet chewy tannins and a long, rich fruity finish. Reserved and tight still. Give it time.--1997 Italian blind retrospective. Best after 2010. — JS

Deep, bright ruby-red. Sweet, spicy aromas of redcurrant and plum. Still rather closed in the mouth following the recent bottling, but the plummy fruit and spicy wood appear to be nicely integrated, with the result that the wine is not at all overly oaky. Rather silky texture. Finishes with big, ripe tannins that spread out to coat the palate.

17/20

Jancis Robinson

The engaging Chiara Boschis has fashioned a wine with a particularly lively, healthy colour and aromatic although the oak is still evident. Full, smooth, modern on the palate with ripe fruit hiding tannins well. Flashy and atypical but a favourable impression of concentrated, low-yielding Nebbiolo and most impressive length of flavour.

In keeping with the vintage, the 1997 is flashy and extroverted in its aromas of flowers, spices, and toasted oak along with flavors of rich, sweet, red cherry fruit. Although it is dense and concentrated on the palate, Pira’s 1997 Cannubi also maintains a great sense of freshness, giving it excellent balance for the vintage. Comes across as still needing a year or two in the bottle before being ready to go. Robertparker.com
