This is the second vintage of Camarcanda produced. The Ca' Marcanda 2001 Bolgheri Rosso Camarcanda (a blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc) is sailing along nicely today despite its impressive age. Tasted more than two decades after fruit came off the vines, the wine is integrated and smooth with dried blackberry, cassis, dried earth, licorice and grilled herb. The vines were only four years old when this wine was made, but the pedigree of place holds strong. This pretty wine concludes a fascinating vertical tasting. ML Tasted Jan 2022
Subtle yet rich aromas of blackberry, chocolate and tobacco. Full-bodied, with silky and refined tannins and a long, long finish. Slightly austere now; needs time.
The 2001 Camarcanda is a beautiful wine from the second vintage, when the vines were just five years old. Offering lift and fresh mineral earth, with notes of redcurrant liqueur, it is bright and lively with rosemary and thyme. Medium to full-bodied, its red fruit is liberal on the palate, and it displays freshness in its notes of red cherry, currant, and salty earth. It has fresh acidity and is long on the palate, with fruit that is still fresh. The fantastic energy of this wine makes a strong argument that old vines are not necessarily the complete picture for producing wines with longevity. Drink 2023-2033. AF
