2016 Giscours

Colour: Red
Vintage: 2016
Appellation: Margaux
96-97 (JS)
Giscours is a major player in Bordeaux, certainly the most famous property on the famed Labarde plateau; it is also the first significant member of the 1855 classification that you meet when driving up the D2 artery through the Médoc. The entire estate covers almost 300 hectares, of which 80 hectares are under vine comprised of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 23% Merlot, 3.5% Cabernet Franc and 3.5% Petit Verdot. The terroir has long been admired and the late great Bordeaux professor and winemaker Denis Dubourdieu once opined that “Chateau Giscours has one of the most homogeneous terroir/soil in the Médoc area.” Consistency is its watchword, therefore

Tasting Notes and Scores

93-94

Bordeaux Index

An estate in renaissance under the management of Alexander van Beek, Giscours is once again producing very fine wines typical of Margaux. Really stylish, restrained nose with loads of lovely fresh strawberry, raspberry and plum fruit. Fine minerality lends the palate a real high-toned freshness - bright and breezy but with layers of delightful, sweet fruit. What another great Giscours. - April 2017

93

Wine Advocate

Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2016 Giscours gives up aromas of cassis, chocolate, earth, tar, pepper and hoisin with touches of flowers and a meaty nuance. The palate is medium to full-bodied, firm and grainy with a great core and a long finish.
Lisa Perrotti-Brown, Nov 2018

94

Neal Martin

The 2016 Giscours comes off the back of the superlative 2015, not an easy wine to follow. It clearly boasts more horsepower on the nose compared the de Tertre, presenting layers of blackberry, cedar and crushed violet aromas that leap from the glass. The medium-bodied palate is crisp and focused, with grainy tannin and a pencil-box-infused finish. Winemaker Alexandre van Beek has retained the density this Margaux showed out of barrel, to offer a classy wine that will benefit from several years in bottle. - vinous.com, Jan 2019

92-95

Wine Spectator

Bay, savory and iron notes lead off in this energetic wine. Lots of juicy cherry and plum fruit forms the core. Singed alder accents line the finish. There's lots going on here, but this pulls together nicely in the end. Well done. - James Molesworth (WineSpectator.com, April 2017

96-97

James Suckling

This is extremely long and linear with a powerful and refined texture of superfine tannins. Full-bodied, yet so tight and polished. The finish is very, very impressive. Snaps at the end. Better than the 2015? - March 2017

17/20

Jancis Robinson

Glowing purple. Concentrated and sappy - real energy here. Glossy and fresh. Really exuberant. Perhaps not one of the most earnestly fashioned for the very long term but a real crowd-pleaser. Drink 2024-2040. - jancisrobinson.com, April 2017

Antonio Galloni

The 2016 Giscours is complex, aromatically intense and beguiling, with myriad layers of flavors that unfold with time in the glass. Black cherry, sage, leather, smoke and menthol add plenty of intrigue, but above all else, it is the wine's balance and sense of harmony that make the deepest impression. Under the leadership of Alexander Van Beek and his team, Giscours has been on a roll over the last few years. The 2016 is another fine vintage. - vinous.com, January 2019

93

Jeb Dunnuck

The 2016 Château Giscours is fabulous stuff, offering a beautiful, complex (and classic Margaux) perfume of smoke tobacco, black currants, truffly earth, and spring flowers. Finesse-driven, medium-bodied, and seamless on the palate, it has ultra-fine tannins and no hard edges, and is already drinking beautifully. Nevertheless, it’s going to benefit from 3-4 years of bottle age and cruise for 20-25 years or more. The blend of the 2016 is 81% Cabernet Sauvignon and 19% Merlot and it’s well worth a case purchase. - jebdunnuck.com, February 2019

Decanter

Concentrated autumnal fruit offers a hawthorny bramble of blackberry and bilberry. Big-framed, muscular tannins are joined by plenty of acidity - it's very clearly built to last and confident in its ability to reward those with patience. Matured in 50% new oak. Axel Marchal and Valerie Lavigne consult. - decanter.com, Jane Anson, October 2018
