2015 Pichon Baron

Colour: Red
Vintage: 2015
Appellation: Pauillac
98 (JD)
Pichon Baron is the most photographed Chateau in Bordeaux and produced good, occasionally brilliant, wines from the 60s to 80s. Since the purchase of Pichon Baron in 1988 by AXA Millesimes, the property has gone from strength to strength to become one of the most consistent in quality and fair in value. The quality achieved from this grand terrior is constantly biting at the heels of next door neighbour Latour. Under the stewardship of Christian Seely this estate has shown itself to be one of the most consistently high-performing Chateaux in Pauillac, if not the whole of the Medoc. The improvements began under the auspices of Jean-Michel Cazes (of Lynch Bages fame) culminating in the sensational 1989/90 combination; they continued and indeed arguably picked up further pace in 2000 when the charming, bow-tie-sporting Christian Seely took over. Since then the estate has moved to a new level, with the most significant change being the accurate identification of the most appropriate plots across the estate for each of their wines. Whilst this has inevitably reduced the potential volume, the quality of fruit which now goes into the Grand Vin is so exceptional that Pichon Baron can be considered a true paragon of Pauillac. As Neal Martin states “the wines of Pichon-Baron certainly rank with some of the best in Pauillac... This is undoubtedly a château that has really found its own identity since the late-80's and under the aegis of Christian Seely, is asserting itself as a Pauillac wine to be reckoned with.”

Tasting Notes and Scores

94-96

Bordeaux Index

The bolder, more intense and most robust of the Pichons, this estate is expertly run by the inimitable Christian Seeley. Textbook Pauillac, with pure blackcurrant fruit, tobacco leaf, a hint of gravel and graphite. Bright and lifted. Lovely texture, firm but supple. Really intense, pure, clean blackcurrant fruit, with juicy characters and great mineral balance. (77% Cabernet Sauvignon, 23% Merlot.)

Wine Advocate

Medium to deep garnet-purple in color, the 2015 Pichon-Longueville Baron is enticingly scented of chocolate-covered cherries, crushed red currants and mulberries with touches of baking spices, potpourri and bay leaves plus a hint of fallen leaves. Sumptuously elegant, refreshing and medium-bodied with gorgeous, expressive, perfumed red fruits and very fine, very firm tannins, it has a persistent, perfumed finish. Its remarkable intensity, freshness and very firm frame suggest a long-lived Pichon Baron, which should cellar gracefully for 30+ years. - Lisa Perrotti-Brown, Interim Issue Mid-February 2018, The Wine Advocate

The 2015 Pichon-Longueville Baron was a superlative wine from barrel and I have no reason to change that view now that it is in bottle. It possesses and extraordinarily pure but intense bouquet with blackberry, bilberry, crushed stone and graphite that seem to gain intensity with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with svelte tannin, great depth and cohesion, gently gripping the mouth although not as tannic or as masculine as I was anticipating, exhibiting great finesse on the finish. This is certainly within first growth quality. Anticipated maturity: 2022 - 2050.

Wine Spectator

Really packed, with very energetic blackberry, black currant and plum fruit, pushed by anise and sweet spice and rumbling through the broad, iron-edged finish. Shows lots of heft, but the impression is fresh, and this is built for the long haul. Impressive.

– James Molesworth (WineSpectator.com, April 2016)

James Suckling

This is a muscular edition with attractive, deeply ripe blackberries and plums set amid firm and assertively linear tannins that hold the finish long and on point. Cool-fruited finish. There’s great potential here. Try this from 2023.

Dark crimson. Much less immediately attractive on the nose than Pichon Lalande. But with real tension and follow through on the palate. Very Pauillac indeed! Muscular. Drink 2025-2045.

A dramatic, sweeping wine, the Pichon-Longueville Baron is even better from bottle than it was from barrel. The 2015 is dense, plush and totally voluptuous as it sweeps across the palate to make its presence known. Nuanced and poised, with seemingly endless layers of nuance, the 2015 is super-impressive. A melange of dark red/purplish fruit, lavender, mint, spice and rose petal builds as this towering, dramatic Pauillac shows off its allure. In 2015, Pichon Baron is endowed with spectacular balance and class. This is quite simply a brilliant showing from the 2015. vinous.com, February 2018

Reminding me of the 1990, the 2015 Château Pichon Baron is a sensational bottle of wine made from 80% Cabernet Sauvignon and 20% Merlot that spent 18 months in 80% new French oak. Boasting a deep purple color as well as awesome notes of black raspberries, toasted spices, cassis, lead pencil shavings, tobacco leaf and building minerality, this full-bodied, concentrated 2015 has sweet tannin, a great texture, and a big, big finish. Pauillac all the way, with both opulence and finesse, forget bottles of 4-5 years and enjoy anytime over the following two to three decades. This is a match for the 2009, 2000, and 1990.
