2016 Pape Clement

Colour: Red
Vintage: 2016
Appellation: Pessac Leognan
97-98 (JS)
Since 2005 Pape Clement has been growing in fame across the world. Owner Bernard Magrez, described by Robert Parker as “one of Bordeaux’s most interesting visionaries”, was once the owner of multiple wine estates across Bordeaux; however he disposed of virtually all these‘lower ranked’ properties in order to focus on the cru classes, and in particular, his ‘jewel in the crown’ Pape Clement. This is definitely an estate which has moved up the ranks: as Parker also says of M. Magrez “He has done a remarkable job in turning around this once moribund property that made a bevy of undrinkable wines into one of the superstars of Bordeaux.” Just a stone’s throw from Haut Brion, it has had a superb period since the start of this century, racking up a series of high scores from Parker, culminating in the perfectly-scored 2026

Tasting Notes and Scores

93-95+

Bordeaux Index

Explosive, impressive and intense wine from the stable of renowned winemaker Bernard Magrez. Fabulous harmony between Merlot and Cabernet - red and black fruit, perfume and high toned mineral qualities. Fabulous quality of tannin, carrying sweet fruit and freshness, held together by mineral power and violet characters. - April 2017

Neal Martin

The 2016 Pape Clément bursts out of the glass, offering ripe blackberry, raspberry coulis, fresh mint and hints of licorice on the well-defined nose. It is perhaps a little more opulent than its peers, but unlike in the past, I don’t find it excessive. The palate is well balanced with supple tannin. There is a killer line of acidity and real panache toward a velvety, almost Pauillac-like finish armed with shimmering black fruit laced with graphite. Superb. - vinous.com, Jan 2019

94-97

Wine Spectator

Intense, with vivacious cassis, blueberry and boysenberry confiture notes, while tar, anise and warm fruitcake flavors pulse underneath. Offers seriously flashy toast at the end, but has the density to soak it up. A big wine. - James Molesworth (WineSpectator.com, April 2017)

97-98

James Suckling

This is phenomenal with a density and finesse that are hard to remember for this wine. Full-bodied, tight and polished. Seamless texture and salty undertones. Goes on for minutes. Truly great. What a barrel sample. - March 2017

93-96

Antonio Galloni

The 2016 Pape Clément exudes class and is one of the raciest, silkiest wines I have ever tasted here. The purity and intensity of the flavors is striking. Dark cherry, chocolate, spice and leather open up first. The full range of aromatics has not developed yet - that will come with time. Today, it is the wine's balance that is most remarkable. - vinous.com, April 2017

Jeb Dunnuck

Tasted on two separate occasions, the 2016 Château Pape Clément never failed to impress, offering a huge, powerful, full-bodied personality as well as beautiful notes of cassis, graphite, high-class cigar tobacco, asphalt, and graphite. About as sexy as it gets in the vintage, with silky tannins and loads of fruit, it’s perfectly balanced and has a great finish. The 2016 is a blend of 60% Merlot, 36% Cabernet Sauvignon, and the balance Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc, all raised in 60% new barrels. - jebdunnuck.com, February 2019

Decanter

An extremely attractive Pape Clement, with its own style and the feeling of the fruit being layered over a silky, seductive line of dark chocolate and tarry oak – and it works. This is big but has good balance, not over the top. It's enjoyable, silky and richly textured, and will age well. The tannins start to build on the finish, with a chewy quality that speaks of the extraction. There’s a lot to enjoy here. - decanter.com, Jane Anson, December 2018
