2011 l'Eglise Clinet

Colour: Red
Vintage: 2011
Appellation: Pomerol
95 (RP)
Famous for being one of the hardest working vignerons in the whole of Bordeaux, the late Denis Durantou left no stone unturned in his search to get every last ounce of potential from his vines and their very special terroir. A mere 4-and-a-bit hectares of deep clay and gravel soils, planted predominantly to Merlot but with a dose of some of the oldest Cabernet Franc in the region – almost 70 years old – L’Eglise Clinet produces some of the most captivating wine from the Right Bank. They are unashamedly rich and concentrated, but always in perfect balance and harmony with some of the finest, most precise tannins you will find anywhere in Bordeaux; it has slowly gained a legion of followers who will accept no substitute. Whilst Denis will always be synonymous with the estate, his daughters Noemie and Constance who have taken over since his death in early 2020 will undoubtedly continue the excellent work at this prodigious estate. L’Eglise Clinet is not a wine you can rush into. Whilst some Pomerols are plush and generous from the start, this takes time and effort – and will reward the patient.

Tasting Notes and Scores

93-95

Bordeaux Index

This year's l'Eglise Clinet just oozes class: wines like this make it astonishing that we are referring to 2011 as a disappointing vintage. We must always keep in context that without 2009 and 2010, this year would be held in much higher esteem and where winemakers have got it right, as in this case, the wines are excellent. It's both light, airy and effortless and yet serious with a dense core of sweet fruit and real poise. The finish is very long and precise; a master class in Pomerol winemaking from Denis.

Wine Advocate

With a dense ruby/purple color is followed by a pure nose of mulberries, cherry liqueur and spring flowers, but no hint of oak, this full-bodied, opulent, rich beauty exhibits impressive purity, texture, richness and length. Not as structured or tannic as Trotanoy, it moves more in the direction of the opulence and flashy, showy fruit of Hosanna and Petrus. It should drink well for 15-20 years. 95 points – Robert Parker (Wine Advocate #212, April 2014)

The 2011 l'Eglise-Clinet has a generous and high-toned bouquet with menthol-tinged red berry fruit, a hint of cough candy and black olive. This has good complexity and focus, manifesting more elegant and precision with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with lithe tannins, touches of mocha and black pepper infusing the red berry fruit, very cohesive with admirable concentration on the finish. This is drinking superbly now. Gorgeous. Tasted blind at the annual 10-Year-On tasting.

Wine Spectator

Offers a core of crushed plum, raspberry and boysenberry fruit, held together by anise, fruitcake and bergamot notes. A hint of rooibos tea courses through the finish. Delivers a gorgeous mouthfeel, without any of the vintage's taut structure. Best from 2015 through 2028. 1,500 cases made. – James Molesworth (WineSpectator.com, March 2014)

James Suckling

A wine that has a lovely depth of fruit and balance for the vintage, with blackberry, licorice and dark-chocolate character. Full and very silky. Very impressive. What a wonderful wine for the vintage. Full of finesse. Better in 2016. – jamessuckling.com, Feb 2014

16.5/2

Jancis Robinson

Fresh dark fruit on the nose. Not very expressive just now. But lithe and supple on the palate and nicely fluid to a long fresh finish. Drinkability at last. Drink: 2017-2028 – Julia Harding (jancisrobinson.com, Feb 2015)

Good bright ruby. Knockout nose combines crushed raspberry, stone, iron, mint, violet and coffee. Very pure, precise and bright on the palate, with deep dark berry fruit flavors complicated by minerals, flowers and cocoa. The bright acidity extends the flavors nicely on the long finish. Cool and restrained Pomerol, with mounting tannins that call for patience. Ian D'Agata
