2014 Gruaud Larose

Colour: Red
Vintage: 2014
Appellation: St Julien
94 (JS)
A 2nd growth Saint-Julien château, Gruaud Larose produces some of the Médoc’s finest wines and its worth remains undisputed among the winemakers and critics of today. With over 80 hectares, it is a plot that has remained under vine since the beginning of the château’s existence – and many of the current vines in use stretch back to almost a hundred years. Recent investment has been significant as the estate’s owners look to return the wines to their former glory and the evidence thus far, from the 2015 vintage onwards, suggests it is very much paying off. As such, this château deserves to be held in the highest esteem.

Tasting Notes and Scores

92

Neal Martin

The 2014 Gruaud Larose has a sophisticated bouquet with blackberry, minerals, raspberry coulis and cedar aromas that waft generously from the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with fine grain tannin, crisp and focused with impressive density in the mouth. It is grippy and assertive; clearly a Saint Julien predesigned for long-term ageing, with a precise finish that bodes well for the future. Excellent. Tasted blind at the annual Southwold tasting. - vinous.com, March 2018

James Suckling

Aromas of strawberries and cherries follow through to a full body, silky tannins and a tangy finish. Fresh and clean. Linear and pretty. Purity of fruit is impressive. Drink in 2020. - jamessuckling.com, February 2017

Jancis Robinson

Deep crimson. Scented and seductive. Sweet and polished. Not that dense but completely juicy. Textbook claret that you could serve quite soon. - jancisrobinson.com, April 2017
