There is a reason the Muga brothers have two wines in the Merchant's Collection: because they're just the nicest and most talented producers in Rioja. I never thought I would find a white Rioja of this quality and style to offer at this price; I had almost given up. When you try it, you'll see why it's a fitting tribute to their mother. Bodegas Muga was founded in 1932 by Isaac Muga and his wife, Aurora Caño. Both Isaac and Aurora came from winemaking families and had grown up ensconced in the winemaking industry. Creating their own winery, the couple has taken it from strength to strength and over the years, Muga wines have gained international recognition and acclaim.
The Bodegas Muga vineyards are situated on the east and south-facing slopes of the Obarenes Mountains, located in the northern region of the province of La Rioja, in the Oja and Tirón river valleys in the sub-region of the Qualified Designation of Origin known as La Rioja Alta. The River Oja Valley (RIOJA) enjoys a unique climate, not only thanks to its location surrounded by climatic influences but also due to the Mediterranean, Atlantic and Continental climatic elements. These influences combine harmoniously to create ideal conditions for growing high-quality grapes. Bodegas Muga’s focus on long growth cycles ensures the grapes reach a delicate, prolonged and complex state of ripeness which is, without a doubt, the key to the region’s potential for producing some of the world’s most exquisite wines.
For this particular white Rioja, the grapes are planted on clay and calcareous soils at the foot of the Obarenes mountains, which are 100% barrel fermented in new oak, from the winery's cooper.
