2016 Rieussec

Colour: White
Vintage: 2016
Appellation: Sauternes
98-99 (JS)
Undoubtedly among the top tier of properties in Sauternes, Rieussec has been highly revered for long over a century. Thought by many to be this regions second best estate next to Yquem, it has churned out many great vintages, most notably the 100 point (Wine Spectator) 2001. In 1984 it was sold by Albert Vuillier to Domaine Rothschild (of Lafite fame) who owns it to this day. Rieussec has approximately 90 hectares under vine averaging 25 years of age. Yields are extremely low (around 15hl/ha) and so a poultry 5,000 cases are produced each year.

Tasting Notes and Scores

Neal Martin

The 2016 Rieussec has an elegant bouquet of pure honeysuckle, orange pith, peach and light minerally aromas. The palate is well balanced with fine precision and pleasant fatness, featuring white peach and almond-infused, honeyed fruit. A touch of vanilla emerges toward the finish. This was a barrel sample due to be bottled in January 2019, though it was virtually the finished wine. - vinous.com, Jan 2019

James Suckling

Lots of botrytis here in addition to dried mushrooms and dried fruit such as pineapple and peaches. Medium to full body. Medium sweet. Very long and intense. A triumph. - March 2017

Ginger nose. Solid, a little yeoman-like. Almost as though they have given up trying for sophistication with this wine. Very sweet with the acidity slightly uncomfortably low. Drink 2024-2040. - jancisrobinson.com, April 2017

The 2016 Rieussec is gorgeous. Despite the relatively low acidity of the vintage, it preserves a good deal of aromatic freshness, with plenty of lemon confit, passion fruit and coconut overtones. The decision to lower the Sémillon a touch and increase the Sauvignon Blanc has paid handsome rewards. The 2016 is not a truly profound Sauternes - that would have been nearly impossible this vintage - but it comes close. Quite frankly, it is nearly impossible to spit. - vinous.com, April 2017

A step up over the Carmes de Rieussec, the beautiful 2016 Château Rieussec has remarkable purity and freshness while still packing beautiful depth of fruit. Honeyed peach, apricot, flower oil, and even a hint of wet stone all emerge from this full-bodied, thick, opulent effort. I love it. It has a rounded, sexy style ideal for drinking any time over the coming 15-20 years. The 2016 is a final blend of 83% Sémillon, 12% Sauvignon Blanc and 5% Muscadelle. - jebdunnuck.com, February 2019
