Bordeaux Index

Again a reductive character but also clear purity of plum and cherry fruit and spice. Elegant, sweet fruit, perfumed mid palate, very fine tannins giving great balance. Mineral on the finish, extremely fine and balanced. Outperforming the vintage?

A blend of 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc, the 2021 La Petite Eglise opens in the glass with aromas of dark berries, licorice, loamy soil and black truffle. It's medium to full-bodied, concentrated and tensile, with terrific depth at the core and a long, saline finish,

The 2021 Le Petit Lion represents one-third of the production from the Clos de Léoville. It is raised 40% new oak. It has a bright bouquet, a mixture of blackberry and blueberry fruit, fine delineation, quite floral and Margaux-like in style. The palate is medium-bodied with edgy, slightly chalky tannins on the entry, a fine salinity here that, for me, marks it out against the La Petite Marquise with quite a persistent tail on the finish. Just needs 2-3 years in bottle. Alcohol level is 13.27% here.

Lifted and floral on the nose and palate. Juicy but structured, the grainy tannins providing persistence and drive. Should fill out further in the bottle. (JL) 14%
