Bodegas Caro – the highly-esteemed joint venture between Nicolás Catena Zapata (the “ca” in “Caro”) and Domaines Barons de Rothschild-Lafite (the “ro”) – was born in 1999, blending the expertise of the Rothschilds in growing, vinifying, and ageing Cabernet Sauvignon, with the meticulously detailed knowledge of high-altitude Mendoza Malbec built up by the Catena family. Together, they created what Jancis Robinson describes as “a thoroughly French blend of Cabernet with the velvety local Malbec grape”, the quality and elegance of which has impressed her from their very first vintage (the 2000). The aim from the outset has been “to make a wine of which one could enjoy two bottles” – a wine of finesse and freshness – and this has been consistently achieved.
