Tasting Notes and Scores
The 2019 Cheval des Andes is a 50/50 blend of Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon from Las Compuertas and Paraje Altamira, Mendoza. The 2019 was 40% aged in 225-liter barrels, 40% in 500-liter barrels and 20% in foudres. It’s red with violet flecks in the glass. It has a fresh nose of plum and blackcurrant accompanied by hints of white pepper, mint and violets over a bed of cedar and sandalwood. On the palate, the feel is finely grained with a leaner, more agile flow than in previous years, while the freshness brings plenty of energy before the lengthy finish of fruit and country herb aromas.

Full bottle 1,447 g – feels pretty heavy! 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 50% Malbec. 'An Argentinian expression of Ch Cheval Blanc' apparently. Really very smart, harmonious blend of grapes and countries, not to say continents. Rich, ripe nose that says Mendoza with a beautifully balanced palate that's more like a Cheval Blanc from a ripe vintage. Very long and caressing. Rather irresistible. (JR)

A long harvest from 14 March to 4 April due to variable weather . 50/50 Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec. Deep colour with sweet, smoky black fruit on the nose, this is powerful in fruit but matched by the use of spicy oak. The palate is dense and oily, with rich, black forest fruit and pepper coming together. The spiciness increases with a dried violet tone. Very slick and stylish, but perhaps lacking a little definition at the moment. (TP)
