Bordeaux Index has been a proud champion of WhistlePig since its launch in 2010, admiring its bold reinvention of American rye whiskey. Inspired by their legendary Boss Hog Series, we challenged them to create a similarly impressive collection exclusively for us. In 2023, The Encyclopedia of Rye's Volume One launched with whiskey aged 11 years in cask. Now, we're thrilled to unveil the next chapter in the story, and for the first time, the collection is available by the individual bottle.
Spanning five distinct volumes, WhistlePig's Encyclopedia of Rye is crafted from 110 hand-selected barrels. With just 22 barrels per volume, it stands as WhistlePig's rarest collection to date and is one of the most ambitious single barrel programmes ever, showcasing the breadth and depth of rye whiskey in its most authentic form as it ages. These whiskies have been carefully matured at WhistlePig, to be bottled as single barrel, cask strength expressions, beginning at 11 years of age and ending at 16 years of age (skipping 13YO).
Eminently collectible, we are delighted to now offer the second edition of The Encyclopedia of Rye - the rare and uncompromising 12 Year Old. Individual bottles are available to purchase on our website with the exclusive 22 bottle collections available through your Account Manager or our Spirits team. The 11 Year Old has just a few full sets remaining and is available by request. If you'd like to find out more or purchase a full set of either the 11 Year Old or 12 Year Old, please don't hesitate to get in touch with [email protected].
Everything you need to know
To build The Encyclopedia of Rye, we handpicked 110 of the finest barrels from WhistlePig’s farm, shaping them into five distinct volumes - each evolving with every additional year of ageing. At just 22 barrels per volume, this series is the smallest and rarest WhistlePig collection ever released. Even the very first Boss Hog - the most limited edition to date - had slightly more volume at 24 barrels. There is currently no other WhistlePig collection as rare, as exclusive or as pure as this.
Celebrating not only rye's history but its wonderful diversity of style and flavour, this limited-edition collection is one that revels in nuance and detail, with each cask offering its own unique profile. Under the guidance of the late Dave Pickerell and his successors (Emily Harrison, Meghan Ireland and Liz Rhoades), WhistlePig have created one of the most thorough programmes of barrel monitoring and sampling ever in order to capture the very essence of rye; an ‘encyclopedia’ of the liquid.
The series of five volumes presents one of the most captivating collections of whiskies on the planet and with the liquid selected by Dave Pickerell, the collections are a final opportunity to pay homage to Dave’s legacy.
"WhistlePig began with a dream to unlock the potential of Rye Whiskey through extended and experimental maturation. The Encyclopedia is one of our most ambitious endeavours toward that goal - a once-in-a-lifetime journey through the depths of our Single Barrel warehouse. Each volume reveals a new layer of character and complexity, showcasing how much Rye evolves year after year. This is more than just a whiskey collection - it's a living record of the next chapter of Rye." - Mitch Mahar, WhistlePig Distiller
The WhistlePig Encyclopedia of Rye Volume Two is available by the individual bottle on the website, with Volume One (11 Year Old) and Volume Two (12 Year Old) available in the full 22 bottle sets on request. If you'd like to order multiple bottles, get in touch with our spirits team.
All the 22 bottle sets will soon be available - 11 Year Old, 12 Year Old, 14 Year Old, 15 Year Old, 16 Year Old - and are all presented in luxury presentation boxes creating the perfect impression of an Encyclopedia of Rye.
