Tasting Notes and Scores

98 DR

Another stunning vintage from this brilliant estate that is just delivering hit after hit. Concentration and intensity right from the initial aromatics, damson, cassis and blackberry fruits that you could almost drink now until the tannins build up across the palate and remind you that this is built to last. Velvety texture, black chocolate and crushed stone minerality on the finish. One of the wines of the vintage. Tasted twice, one week apart. 60% 1st wine. A yield of 45hl/ha.

Decanter

96-98 RP

Composed of 86% Merlot and 14% Cabernet Franc, the 2019 Beausejour (Duffau Lagarrosse) was harvested from the 24th of September to the 7th of October. Yields were 45 hectoliters per hectare this year with about 60% of production going into the grand vin. Deep garnet-purple in color, the nose is deceptively forward to begin, giving a wonderful intensity of Morello cherries, wild blueberries and boysenberries scents, soon unfurling to reveal more and more layers: pencil lead, cast-iron pan, wilted roses, oolong tea and charcoal with a hint of garrigue. The medium to full-bodied palate is charged with energetic, crunchy black fruits, framed by firm, grainy tannins and tons of freshness, finishing very long and minerally. If this delivers on its promise, it should be very long-lived indeed! About 2,000 cases are anticipated to be made. LPB

Wine Advocate

The 2019 Beauséjour Héritiers Duffau-Lagarrosse is shaping up to be magnificent. A wine of tremendous breadth and power, the 2019 has so much to offer. An infusion of scorched earth, gravel, spice, menthol and blackberry makes a strong first impression. Virile and potent, the 2019 offers remarkable persistence and yet retains quite a bit of finesse, especially given its size. The tannins are there, but they are matched by the intensity of the fruit. This is one of the most impressive wines of the year in the early going. Tasted two times.

Antonio Galloni

While I don't think the 2019 Château Beausejour (Duffau-Lagarrosse) is going to hit the heights of the 2016 (or maybe the 2018), it's still a brilliant wine from what's clearly a terrific vintage for the Right Bank. A big, rich, and full-bodied 2019 with a dense purple color, it offers a complex, brooding bouquet of black fruits, chocolate, crushed rock, and toasted spice, building tannins, and a big, fleshy, mouthfilling profile that's going to need 3-5 years of bottle age. It reminds me a little bit of the 2012.

A smooth red, showing richness and strength. Blackberries, blueberries, hazelnuts and morel mushrooms. Full body and fine tannins. Solid length.

James Suckling

94-96 NM

The 2019 Beauséjour Héritiers Duffau-Lagarrosse is endowed with precocious black cherries, kirsch and blueberry on the nose. Just a hint of menthol emerges with several minutes' aeration. The palate is beautifully balanced with fine precision, detailed and tensile with real quality stacked up towards the mineral-driven, lightly spiced and sophisticated finish. This year, it might just be pipped by Pavie Macquin, another Saint-Émilion managed by Nicolas Thienpont, nevertheless this has great potential and it should cellar for 30-40 years.
