Tasting Notes and Scores

87 RP

The 1985 admirably reflects the character of this charming vintage. Deep ruby, low in acidity, ripe, round, fruity, and precocious, this medium-bodied, supple wine is very tasty and displays the cedary, black currant fruit so common in the wines of St.-Julien.

Anticipated maturity: Now-2000. Last tasted, 3/90.

This was my first encounter with the 1985 Beychevelle. To be honest, it's not a golden period for this Saint-Julien. It has a strange nose, some Brettanomyces plus the wood component which seems disjointed to what little fruit there is. The palate is quite candied on the entry, a feral Beychevelle with a Rhône-like, slightly caramelly finish. Disappointing in the context of the vintage.
