2014 Chateau Beychevelle 4eme Cru Classe, Saint-Julien

Colour: Red
Vintage: 2014
Region: Bordeaux, Saint-Julien
% Alcohol: 14.00

A wine which has come so far since 2000, Beychevelle was always blessed with propitious terroir but had performed somewhat below par for this benevolent appellation. Undoubtedly benefiting from the combination of the expertise of GM Philippe Blanc and the investment in a stunning new winery, Beychevelle has progressed from a St Julien ‘also-ran’ into one of the leading wines of the appellation.

Tasting Notes and Scores

95 JS

A very classical St. Julien that’s got good concentration and real elegance, too. Great black fruits on the nose with subtle oak, and the richness and dry tannins are balanced out beautifully. You could drink it now, but this will age beautifully.

Deep ruby colour, as it hits the 10 year mark you can see the work that Beychevelle had begun to do at this point in terms of tightning up its fruit expression and working the tannins to elongate them. Slate, cocoa bean, espresso, bilberry, cassis, totally delicious, a lot to enjoy if a little short on the finish. Will soften further over next decade but you can begin drinking now. Harvest September 25 to October 14, 60% new oak for ageing.

A little savoury on the nose and palate, some meaty aspects coming through, accenting the bright fruit with some gravy, meaty tones. Good juiciness, there's definitely lift and high acidity coursing through this one, but it loses a bit of oomph come the finish. Good minerality, wet stones, liquorice, graphite and milk chocolate. Just feels a bit faded, but still very much enjoyable.

The 2014 Beychevelle has an intense bouquet with macerated small black cherries, bilberry, brine and light oyster shell aromas that just feel a little ostentatious within the context of the growing season. The palate is medium-bodied with firm tannin, quite elegant in style, the acidity well judged with a crisp, silky smooth mixture of black and blue fruit to the finish. It leans slightly to the more modern style of winemaking but it is very well pulled off and it has the matière to suggest long-term ageing. Tasted blind at the annual Southwold tasting. - vinous.com, March 2018

Deep crimson. Sweet plum-like dark fruit. Rich and chewy on the palate, surprisingly soft already with moderate acidity. Deep, full-bodied and rather gentle overall. (JH)

Tasted blind. Deep garnet. Ripe fruits, some sweetness. Firm, dry, still needing time for the tannins to mellow. A powerful and spicy wine with good length. (JH)
