Tasting Notes and Scores
A dense, sexy red with blackberry, black-truffle and bark character with a full body, chewy tannins and loads of structure at the end. Lovely, ripe tannins. Fresh on the finish.

Inky plum colour, clear coffee grounds on the attack but this is also full of Pomerol richness, bitter chocolate shavings and damson plum fruit. You are definitely in a concentrated, knitted-down style here with plenty of muscle that delivers appellation signature. Tasted twice. Harvest September 14 to 25.

Rocking levels of ripe black fruits, smoked tobacco, chocolate, camphor, and spicy oak emerge from the 2020 Château Bourgneuf, and it's a medium to full-bodied, nicely textured, balanced Pomerol that comes in on the richer, more mouth-filling side of the vintage. It's going to benefit from 4-5 years of bottle age but is one sexy, pleasure-bent beauty I'd be happy to have in the cellar. My note finished with "love it."

Bourgneuf has been on a roll for a number of vintages. The 2020 is another terrific showing from the Vayron family. A spine of fine tannins gives the 2020 its drive and overall sense of proportion. Black cherry, grilled herbs, menthol, licorice, chocolate and spice all open in the glass. The 2020 is a serious, rather somber Bourgneuf that is going to need at least a few years to be at its best. Tasted two times.

The 2020 Bourgneuf is a Pomerol château that has stepped up another level in recent vintages, and this latest release continues that trend. It has a quintessential Pomerol nose of black-truffle-infused black fruit, hints of orange blossom and light tertiary scents. The palate is medium-bodied with firm tannins. A well-structured Bonalgue, yet with plenty of freshness and maybe the most precise finish that I have encountered from this estate. Chapeau to winemaker Dominique Vayron; this is outstanding. Tasted twice with consistent notes.

Deep purple-black in color, the 2020 Bourgneuf sashays out of the glass with expressive notes of crushed black cherries, boysenberries and prunes, plus wafts of melted chocolate, Indian spices and cedar chest, with a hint of cardamom. The medium to full-bodied palate is chock-full of spicy/peppery black fruit preserves, framed by ripe, rounded tannins and lovely freshness, finishing long and earthy.

With a dark hue the wine is silky, rich, lush and supple. Medium-bodied with an earthy, cocoa-infused, ripe, deep plum character, the long finish is already displaying its chocolate tinged, black cherries, plum, spice, espresso and licorice character. Give it some time to develop additional complexities in the cellar before pulling the cork. 91-93

85% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Franc. Cask sample.
Purple-black hue. Deep and dense with a lick of vanilla oak. Palate juicy and round with plenty of matière. Plentiful but refined tannins. Oak present but should integrate. Firm finish. Not quite fully knit but the potential is there. (JL)
