Notes of damp earth, composty, leafy vegetation and sweet currants, plums, and cherries in addition to some licorice jump from the glass of this evolved, deep ruby-colored wine that shows medium body, excellent concentration, an elegant but pure style, and nice texture and length. Anticipated maturity: now-2016.

Tasted at the Brane-Cantenac vertical at the château, the 2002 Brane-Cantenac is a blend of 59% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot and 6% Cabernet France matured in 70% new French oak. It is clean and fresh on the nose: blackberry, tobacco and gravel notes emerging nicely from the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with supple blackberry and strawberry fruit, that tincture of tobacco coming through towards the conservative, but fresh finish. The 2002 is maturing in commendable fashion and whilst it will not soar towards the heavens, it should continue to drink well for several years. Tasted April 2015.

Medium ruby. Subdued but pure aromas of blackberry, boysenberry, graphite and violet, with a light inky quality. High-pitched black fruit and floral flavors show enticing sweetness despite slightly elevated acids. Finishes with good length; the firm tannins avoid dryness. But dominated by its youthful spine today.

59% Cabernet Sauvignon, 34% Merlot and 7% Cabernet Franc. 31.6 hl/ha. Garnet red. Diffuse nose with a hint of brambly fruit. Light and easy-going, the acidity present. No great complexity. Short finish. Unlikely to evolve further. (JL)
