2006 Chateau Calon Segur 3eme Cru Classe, Saint-Estephe

Colour: Red
Vintage: 2006
Region: Bordeaux, Saint-Estephe
% Alcohol: 13.00

Calon Segur is one of the most sought-after wines of St Estephe. It tends to find its way deep into the hearts of those who are introduced to it, in much the same way as it did with one of its original owners, Nicolas de Segur (from whom the Chateau name comes); such was his love for the property that, despite also owning two of what became the First Growths, legend has it that he stated “I make my wine at Lafite and Latour, but my heart is in Calon.” It is believed that this story is what led to the estate’s famous use of the heart symbol on their label. Calon’s vines are located north-west of the tiny village of St Estephe, less than a kilometer from the river and far, far away from the glamour of central Bordeaux and the precision-manicured lawns and architectural drama of Pauillac. This only seems to add to its charm and brings a certain ‘down-to-earth’ character to the property. Having been the life-long passion of the eccentric Madame Gasqueton until her death in 2011 it was purchased by a major French insurer and since 2012 investment has been constant and significant; however the intention is only to express with even more purity the uniqueness of this particular piece of precious St Estephe terroir.

Tasting Notes and Scores

93 NM

Tasted at Bordeaux Index's tasting and at the château, the 2006 Calon Segur was current winemaker Vincent Millet's first vintage. In many ways, you can see it as one of the last of the "old style" Calon Segur wines with a higher percentage of Merlot than nowadays (the 2006 consists of 33% Merlot), while I aver that the tannins are not as fine as they are nowadays. The Merlot component is vividly expressed on the nose with ravishing ripe red cherries, kirsch and strawberry, just slightly smudged by the alcohol. The palate is medium-bodied with chewy tannin, quite sexy in style but it does not have the class of more recent vintages and it seems to have remained tough up on the finish. It will loosen up with time, so afford this another 6-8 years in bottle. Tasted January 2016. Drink 2022-2040.

The 2006 Calon Ségur was initially restrained but took on weight as it sat in the glass, developing complex aromas of blackberry, graphite, earth, and oak spice with time. The texture was silky, but the density and weight became apparent with time, leading into an impressive finish. This wine seems more youthful than many from this vintage, which augurs well for its future ageing potential. Consulting oenologist Éric Boissenot blended 57% Cabernet Sauvignon, 34% Merlot, 7% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot, and aged the wine entirely in new casks.

Focused and fresh, with violet and blackberry aromas and vanilla undertones. Full-bodied, with very pretty berry fruit character, fine tannins and a long, caressing finish. Refined. Best after 2014.

Aromas of perfumes and blueberries with minerals. Medium-to-full body, fine tannins and a tangy, fresh finish. Attractive tension and austerity to this. Savory and juicy. Drink now or hold.

A blend of 66% Cabernet Sauvignon, 33% Merlot, and 1% Petit Verdot, the 2006 Calon Segur is an elegant, classic effort that represents about 60% of their total production. Deep ruby, with forest floor, cassis, black cherry, and soil undertones in both the aromas and flavors, this is a medium to full-bodied wine. A success for the vintage, it exhibits fine density, moderately high but sweet tannins, and alluring texture, and fine purity. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2035.

Bright ruby-red. Perfumed, terroir-driven aromas and flavors of redcurrant, licorice, iron, cinders, woodsmoke, minerals and pepper, plus a whiff of meat. At once dense and suave, with herbal and peppery nuances contributing to the wine's impression of insinuating vinosity and inner-mouth aromatic character. Almost rustic in its soil tones but not in its refined texture. Finishes with building tannins and a juicy freshness. A wine worth following.

Remarkably deep crimson. Savoury, racy nose with good depth and confidence. Not heavy or rustic – really quite transparent and with almost Lafite-like lift and race. Well done with no greenness and just a little tightening on the finish. Finer than the more solid Montrose. Positively succulent! You might reproach it for being just a little lightweight… (JR)
