Tasting Notes and Scores

94-96 JL

The nose, with its smoke, savory herbs, flowers, black plums, licorice and espresso gets you into the mood. But it is the palate, with its rich, pure, ripe fruits, espresso, spice-box and silky, sweet, fresh plums that steal the show. Long, plush and polished, with layers of chocolate-covered cherries that go on and on, clearly, this is a new level of quality for Carillon d' Angélus. Enjoy this while waiting for Chateau Angelus to mature. The wine blends 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc. 94-96

This is very fine and racy with refined tannins that are long and really precise. It’s medium-bodied with a lovely, creamy texture. Really long and bright.

The 2020 Le Carillon d’Angélus has a compact, tight bouquet that needs more coaxing than I anticipated, almost reluctantly offering brambly black fruit, blueberry, incense and light potpourri scents. The palate is well balanced with a lovely bead of acidity that slices through the pure blackberry and raspberry fruit. I cannot recall a Carillon as precise as this, particularly on the finish. Just a superb Deuxième Vin.

Rich, seductive and powerful with fleshy Merlot fruit, intense with a kick of spice. This is a fairly different blend than you would find in Carillon a few years ago, when there was more Cabernet Franc. Now, with new plots, you can expect it to be more Merlot-focused going forward, setting it clearly apart from the main estate wine. Yields around 40hl/ha. 3.5pH, 60% new oak.

90% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc. Includes the unclassified parcels of Angélus as well as those in St-Christophe-des-Bardes and in proximity to Figeac. Vinified in the new cellar in St-Magne-de-Castillon. Cask sample.
Suave and concentrated with very fine tannins providing a textural plus and impressive length on the finish. Aromatically subdued, the oak (prise de bois) dominating at present. But serious and precise with a tannic frame for ageing. (JL)90% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc.
