2005 Chateau Cheval Blanc, Saint-Emilion Grand Cru

Colour: Red
Vintage: 2005
Region: Bordeaux, Saint-Emilion Grand Cru
% Alcohol: 14.00

Cheval Blanc has long been one of Bordeaux’s most consistent wines. Separated only by a ditch and a road from Pomerol, Cheval has always had a unique style of its own. Neither typically St. Emilon nor Pomerol in character, Cheval Blanc is Cheval Blanc, says Robert Parker. This is thanks in part due to the unusually high proportion of old vine Cabernet Franc used in the wine and unquestionably to the skills of Pierre Lurton and his team who have taken the quality and consistency of this incredible estate to remarkable new heights. In recent years though they have really been on fire, with dynamic young leaders at the helm, a new state-of-the-art cellar and a string of the most consistently highly-scored vintages of virtually any wine in Bordeaux.

The Château Cheval Blanc 2005 has an intense bouquet, one that is more complex than Ausone with a slight marine influence infusing the blackberry and raspberry fruit, hints of wilted violet and cassis surfacing with time an joining the chorus line.. The palate is beautifully balanced with filigree tannin. It feels linear at first and then fans out marvellously with a bravura finish that lacquers the mouth. There is clearly quite brilliant precision here, impressive length and poise with a touch of salinity on the finish. What a spellbinding Cheval Blanc, a Saint Emilion that is just going to get better and better with each passing year.

Served double blind, there was no doubting the quality here. The show nose, with its floral, black plum, earth, herb, dark cherry and tobacco scents was easy to find. But today, much of the palate is held in reserve, and not showing its opulent, decadent fruit. Another 5-8 years of cellaring will allow this to really come alive.

Dark, a little browning at rim; sweet, fresh, gently oak-caramel tinged raspberry and cassis fruit, an early bouquet; beautiful balance, full, concentrated, very finely tannic and with a wealth of remarkably fresh fruit; rich, sweet, fleshy Cheval with a wonderful definition; mouthcoating, close grained and racy in quality, and with great aromatic length. Hugely satisfying, generous yet fresh Cheval Blanc. Drink 2025-55+

($1; 800-$2,000) Good deep ruby-red. Knockout nose offers terrific vinosity to the aromas of dark raspberry, mocha, minerals, licorice, menthol and dark chocolate. Lush, fat and suave, with superb energy and lift to the fine-grained, palate-staining flavors. Despite its rather high 14% alcohol, this boasts near-perfect balance and finishes with outstanding verve. A great vintage for Cheval, and likely to improve in bottle for at least two or three decades.

A prodigious Cheval Blanc that should challenge the 2000 and 1998 as the finest Cheval since the 1990, the 2005's final blend consisted of 55% Cabernet Franc and 45% Merlot. The Merlot harvest began on September 15th and lasted until the Cabernet Franc was finished around October 6th. Administrator Pierre Lurton told me, “I prefer to pick the Merlot a little early, and the Cabernet Franc a little late.” The deep ruby/purple-colored 2005 reveals an extraordinary projected, surreal bouquet of menthol, red, blue, and black fruits, and hints of mocha, licorice, and sweet oak. This opulent, tremendously concentrated Cheval Blanc possesses undeniable finesse, elegance, and freshness as well as a vibrant, nuanced, delineated personality. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2030+. The estate’s second wine, the 2005 Le Petit Cheval (55% Merlot and 45% Cabernet Franc) is one of the better efforts over recent years.

Shaded ruby. Paler than Figeac. Subtle, low-key nose with those old cashmere tannins. Grip on the palate. Dry finish. Lots of elements still knitted in there. (JR)

Subtle but open-knit earth and blood on the nose with very fine tannic weave on the palate but a surprising paucity of fruit; especially after tasting the 2009s. The structure seems more intact than the primary fruit character. And the finish is a little hot too. Not the most convincing example, and not as promising a prospect for ageing, bearing in mind the modest fruit character. (RH)

An absolute legend of a wine, the 2005 Château Cheval Blanc is up there with the greatest wines ever made. Based on 51% Merlot and 49% Cabernet Franc raised all in new oak, this stunning effort clocks in as 13.9% alcohol and a pH of 3.6. Deep ruby hued with no bricking and barely any lighting at the rim, it has that classic Cheval Blanc complexity with incredible cassis and darker currant like fruits as well as smoky, truffly earth, spice, and cedar pencil nuances. Full-bodied, incredibly concentrated, and yet flawlessly balanced and weightless, it still has substantial tannins yet they’re perfectly ripe and flawlessly integrated. It’s as good a wine as I’ve ever tasted. Drink bottles any time over the coming 20-30 years.

The 2005 from Cheval Blanc is a quintessentially elegant, beautiful, deep bluish/ruby-colored wine from St.-Emilion, with raspberry, blueberry, and floral notes, impressive density, great precision, freshness and purity. Full-bodied, but extremely light on its feet, I don’t mean to gush, but it is super-intense, rich and just so meticulously crafted! This is another fabulous wine and a perfect expression for this vintage. It is difficult to forget the gorgeous blueberry and raspberry fruit, full body, sweet tannin, a multi-layered texture, and purity and palate presence of this stunning wine. Drink it over the next 20 years. P.S. In 2005, this was 50% Cabernet Franc and 50% Merlot.

The 2005 Cheval Blanc has been nothing less than magical on two separate occasions. A wine of breathtaking nuance and sophistication, the 2005 Cheval dazzles right out of the gate. With a few hours of aeration the aromatics blossom and the wine is explosive in every dimension. Espresso, rose petal, mint, blood orange and incense all open as the 2005 shows off its magnificence and pedigree. Bright saline underpinnings convey energy, tension and brilliance. Cheval Blanc is perhaps not as immediately seductive as some of the other top 2005s, but its all there. In spades. I would give it a few more years to unwind.
