The second wine of this incredible estate is the 2016 La Clarte de Haut Brion Blanc (76.3% Sémillon and 23.7% Sauvignon). As with the grand vin, it has an incredible mix of vibrancy and richness as well as beautiful tart citrus, lime, white flowers, and crushed rock aromas and flavors. Attractive chamomile, lemon-pith and lemon-grass aromas with a very composed palate that holds a sleek and flavorful, mostly citrus-fruit core and achieves great length and depth.

The 2016 La Clarte de Haut-Brion is lovely. Bright and nicely chiseled, with terrific depth, the Clarte is wonderfully nuanced. Citrus and floral notes give this energetic Sémillon/Sauvignon blend terrific freshness.

This is very attractive, with a pale-gold colour and a gentle white pepper spice aroma accompanied by citrus zest, apple blossom and jasmine, with a touch of candle wax. The 2016 Clarté Haut-Brion Blanc has an open-knit bouquet of orange blossom, lemon curd and light nutty aromas, hints of candle wax emerging with time. The palate is well balanced with a lightly spiced opening. There’s plenty of grilled walnut and smoke here, and something almost white-Rioja-like toward the finish – and I mean that as a complement. This has just gained a little complexity in recent months. Tasted blind at the annual Southwold tasting.
