Tasting Notes and Scores

92-94 RP

The 2021 Clerc Milon is a success, bursting with aromas of blackberries, cassis and plums mingled with violets, tobacco leaf and nicely integrated new oak. Medium to full-bodied, layered and seamless, it's deep, fleshy and complete, with a rich core of succulent fruit, beautifully polished tannins and a long, sapid finish, it's a compelling, characterful wine that transcends the vintage.

The 2021 Clerc Milon is gorgeous. Beams of tannin lend energy and direction to an alluring Clerc Milon that marries fruit density with a classic sense of structure that is quite appealing.

Sappy, concentrated, powerful, this is a wine that has a lot of power naturally and in a vintage like 2021 (and with higher Cabernet Franc and higher Carmanère than the past few years), it runs the risk of being austere. Certainly you feel a sterner character than over the past few years, but there is flexibility in the tannins, and well-worked blackcurrant and blackberry fruit. Will benefit from fattening up through the mid palate over ageing, because all the elements are here. 55% new oak. 57IPT. 3.73ph. Caroline Artaud technical director as of this vintage. Strong candidate for upscore in bottle.

The 2021 Clerc Milon, aged in 55% new oak, contains a little more Cabernet Franc than usual. It has a slightly savory nose displaying moderate vigor and black fruit infused with touches of brown spice. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, and quite broad and fleshy. The plush finish makes me think this will drink well in its youth. Fine, though I lean toward the d'Armailhac this year. 13% alcohol)

Slightly reductive nose, somewhat exotic, very mineral too, with some blood orange. Bit of drive and intensity, good freshness and white stone minerality, some energy too. Red cherry and strawberry fruit but not intense or dramatic - finishes dry.

There is no break in the action when you taste this wine, and I felt I had to type at double-speed to get all of the information down because this is a first-class Clerc Milon. Super-attractive from start to finish, the nose, palate and finish are in perfect harmony, and there is generosity and gregariousness about this wine that puts a smile on your face. After the stunning fruit intensity and amazingly forward air, the tannins come in, and the finish is firm and commanding and unlike any Clerc Milon I can remember. The incremental changes made at this property over the last decade are staggering. Is this the most-improved label in the region? It seems that the vineyard, which has been invested in hugely over the last few years, is eternally grateful. In more challenging vintages, like 2021, it works even harder to repay the efforts made by the viticulture team. This is a new high for Clerc Milon with stunning proportions and exceptional class.

More restrained aromatically than some this year. Dark fruit and savoury nuance. Palate solid and firm with plenty of freshness. Tannins present but well rounded, tightening on the finish to give some persistence. Pleasantly dry finish. Pauillac muscle but in a low-key form. (JL)
