Chateau Clinet, Pomerol

Colour: Red
Vintage: 2016
Region: Bordeaux, Pomerol
% Alcohol: 14.00

Chateau Clinet, the Pomerol property owned by the ambitious Ronan Laborde, has been producing exceptional wine for over two decades. Breaking the mould is the Clinet way. Ronan and Monique Laborde have never shied from doing things their own way, with a sense of style and personality. Starting out very young at the property, Ronan took some time to develop his craft and as each year passes his respect for, and understanding of, the vineyard and its origins increases. Whilst the vintages that put this property on the map were the 1990 and 1989, receiving massive critical acclaim, the Laborde’s more recent investments in the winery and vineyard have created a more consistent, and consistently excellent, wine which stands shoulder to shoulder with its esteemed neighbours..

Tasting Notes and Scores

99 JD

Tasted on four separate occasions, the 2016 Château Clinet is another brilliant wine from this estate. Showing slightly more freshness and purity than the 2015, its saturated purple color is followed by a thrilling array of crème de cassis, graphite, ground herbs, and a terrific sense of minerality. Deep, full-bodied, with building tannins, and a magical sense of purity and elegance paired with real density and depth, it needs short term cellaring and will keep for three decades. - jebdunnuck.com, February 2019

This is a wine that makes you want to slow down, take your time and let those flavours envelop you. It's a little subdued right now, but the texture pulls you in and holds on tight. There is Cabernet in the DNA here and you feel it: a touch of austerity in the first breath, then an intense punch of dark, tight cassis fruits with a liquorice and dark chocolate finish. It's taken on more flesh on the bones during ageing, with the aromatics blossoming through the glass and revealing floral, violet-stained edging and a silky smooth tannic frame. - decanter.com, Jane Anson, January 2019

The 2016 Clinet is composed of 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon. It was aged using the Oxoline system, in 70% new and 30% one-year-old barrels for 16 months. It has a deep garnet-purple color with cedar and smoked meats on the nose giving way to black and red plums and earthy notions with wafts of cassis and pencil shavings. The palate is medium to full-bodied, elegant, polished and vivacious with loads of red and black fruit layers and an earthy finish. Around 4,416 cases produced. LPB

Located on the precious Pomerol 'plateau', Clinet has come on leaps and bounds under the dynamic Ronan Laborde. Dark, deep, concentrated black cherry and plum fruit lifted by high toned red fruit. Big hit of sweet, ripe, dense fruit, very fine tannins and a lovely juicy mid palate. This runs through into a lovely minerality and sense of place. A wine of great confidence coming into its stride. Impressive and charming. - April 2017

Bordeaux Index

The 2016 Clinet, a blend of 88% Merlot and 12% Cabernet Sauvignon, was cropped at 49hl/ha and matured in 70% new oak. It has a quintessential Pomerol bouquet of vibrant floral aromas, black cherries and hints of Christmas cake and truffle. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin and very harmonious and refined. The sample at the château showed a touch more backbone than the one at the London UGC tastings, offering plenty of blackberry and black olive notes and then turning saline toward the dense, muscular finish. A classy, sophisticated Clinet that will reward those with the nous to cellar it for several years. Outstanding. - vinous.com, Jan 2019

The linear character to this is so impressive with beautiful blackberries and blueberries. Crushed stones and minerals. Medium to full body. Very pretty. - March 2017

Warm and fleshy in feel, showing dark plum, boysenberry and blackberry sauce flavors infused with mulling spice and black tea notes. Singed alder and tobacco hints flicker on the finish, adding texture. This delivers an encore of fruit detail on the finish too, with some sneaky length. Seductive. JM

Wine Spectator

92-95 AG

A backward, brooding wine, the 2016 Clinet presents a distinctly dark expression of the appellation and vintage. Black fruit, smoke, licorice and heavy toast notes are front and center. Powerful, structured and dense in the glass, the 2016 is a Pomerol that makes its case with sheer intensity rather than finesse. There is not much subtlety here. If the 2016 comes together, and it may, it will merit an even more positive note. - vinous.com, April 2017
