Tasting Notes and Scores
The 1990 is unquestionably the best wine I have ever tasted from this Pomerol property, which, due to its abnormally high Cabernet Sauvignon content, has never been among my favorite Pomerols. Frequently, Cabernet Sauvignon grown in the soils of Pomerol does not achieve the ripeness it does in the Medoc. For this reason, Pomerols with a high percentage of Cabernet can turn out light-bodied and vegetal. Nevertheless, in 1990 the Clos l'Eglise exhibits an excellent bouquet of cassis, spicy new oak, and subtle herbs. In the mouth, it is medium-bodied, with an attractive elegance and fleshy texture. Drink it over the next 7-10 years.
