1982 Cos d'Estournel 2eme Cru Classe, Saint-Estephe

Colour: Red
Vintage: 1982
Region: Bordeaux, Saint-Estephe
% Alcohol: 13.00

From its peak high up on the St Estephe escarpment, looking down onto Lafite at the north end of Pauillac, Cos d’Estournel’s mystical eastern-inspired Chateau has always produced wines of exotic hedonism. Famed once for its wines of monolithic weight and intensity, since 2011 the estate has seen a real shift in style focusing on creating wines that are beautifully balanced with classical elegance and finesse. The team are clearly increasingly driven to reflect the remarkable mineral terroir of the estate rather than the sheer power of its opulent fruit. Undoubtedly one of the ‘Super Seconds’, in top vintages it can really push the First Growths for quality and panache.

Tasting Notes and Scores

I loved this bottle of 1982 Cos d'Estournel, and it was easily the best bottle I’ve had of this wine, which has always shown slightly tired and over the hill for me. It shows classic, even youthful notes of lead pencil, currants and saddle leather, was full-bodied, had beautiful depth of fruit, and a great, great finish, all pointing to a fully mature yet grand Saint Estephe. Drink up. Aug 2018

This wine is a lovely example of the potential and longevity of the 1982 vintage below the first growth level. Although it shows mature notes of cedar, smoke, and spice, this wine is still youthful and vigorous. The texture is firm yet silky – the tannins are resolved, yet there is still an impression of substance and impressive length here. Although it is mature now, this should easily hold another five to 10 years. Drinking Window: 2022 - 2045

The 1982 Cos d'Estournel dominates Saint-Estèphe in this vintage (for my money, its leading competitor is Haut-Marbuzet, by the way). Remarkably youthful and saturated in appearance, it exhibits inviting aromas of sweet berry fruit, plums, licorice and pencil shavings, followed by a full-bodied, fleshy, lusty, almost unctuous palate of notable concentration and depth. Its fleshy core of fruit is still framed by sweet, powdery tannins. 96pts WK Dec 2022
This 1982 is still displaying a beautiful deep ruby/purple hue as well as a stunning set of aromatics consisting of blue and black fruits, loamy earth, flowers, licorice, and spice box. The wine is medium to full-bodied with sweet tannins, a medium to full-bodied mouthfeel, and a silky finish. It appears to have hit full maturity, but it can easily be held in a cold cellar for another 10+ years. 95pts RP

A superb, fully-mature example of a fabulous Left Bank Bordeaux. Loads of red currants, Indian spice, cigar box, and cedar with leafy herbs are all over the place on the nose and on the generous, refined palate. No need to decant, just pop, pour and enjoy. Drink from 2022-2030. Tasted Nov 2022
