Cos d'Estournel 2eme Cru Classe, Saint-Estephe

Colour: Red
Vintage: 1990
Region: Bordeaux, Saint-Estephe
% Alcohol: 13.00

From its peak high up on the St Estephe escarpment, looking down onto Lafite at the north end of Pauillac, Cos d’Estournel’s mystical eastern-inspired Chateau has always produced wines of exotic hedonism. Famed once for its wines of monolithic weight and intensity, since 2011 the estate has seen a real shift in style focusing on creating wines that are beautifully balanced with classical elegance and finesse. The team are clearly increasingly driven to reflect the remarkable mineral terroir of the estate rather than the sheer power of its opulent fruit. Undoubtedly one of the ‘Super Seconds’, in top vintages it can really push the First Growths for quality and panache.

Tasting Notes and Scores

95 NM

The 1990 Cos d’Estournel is a vintage that I have not tasted for several years. I have always had a soft spot for the 1990. It does not disappoint with gorgeous scents of clove, bay leaf, and warm gravel that are almost Pomerol-like in style. The palate is fresh and lively. This 1990 is very well balanced and eschews the warmth of that summer and allows the terroir to shine. It grips the mouth and offers black truffle and sage towards the slightly grainy textured finish that lingers on the palate. What a sublime Cos d’Estournel. Well-kept bottles will be giving immense pleasure although, you can envisage this lasting another fifteen years, possibly twenty. Tasted at the Cos d’Estournel vertical at the property.

Not as concentrated as the 1982, or as most of the vintages made since 2001, the 1990 Cos has reached full maturity. It exhibits sweet berry fruit intermixed with spice box, herbs, and spring flowers. Expansive, round, and sensual, with wonderful purity as well as lushness, this irresistible wine can be enjoyed over the next 6-10 years.

Wine Advocate

Popped and poured for Father’s Day, the wine is elegant, opulent, silky and fresh on the palate. The wine offers a strong cigar box and tobacco nose, along with distinctive mint and green peppery tones, with a touch of 5 spice, smoke, roasted cassis, cedar and pepper. This is fully mature. There is no reason to decant, except for sediment, or to hold any longer. It’s a gorgeous, old school expression of Cos d’Estournel this hits all the right notes. June 2022

Good full medium ruby. Perfumed aromas of cassis, redcurrant, plum, minerals, coconut and violet. Lush, dense and gentle; rich and chocolatey. With so much baby fat, this wine appears to miss out on ultimate clarity and grip. But finishes tight, with a touch of austerity and nicely restrained sweetness. Still quite young.

Wine Independent

Refined with dark fruits with delicate spice and leather notes. It's full to medium-bodied, with fine tannins. It is a little funky. I would drink it. March 2012

Good dark healthy garnet colour. Classic sweet mature claret. Just the job! Long and beautiful balance. JR Aug 2022
