Tasting Notes and Scores

98 JS

Super aromas of nutmeg, cloves and dried flowers with plums and blackberries. Subtle yet so complex. Full-bodied, tight and integrated with ultra-fine tannins and a beautiful finish. Lasts for minutes. Very, very Cos. Harmony. Texturally marvellous. Drink in 2024.

James Suckling

Composed of 76% Cabernet Sauvignon, 23.5% Merlot and 1.5% Cabernet Franc, the deep garnet-purple colored 2015 Cos d'Estournel is muted at this very young stage. The nose offers fleeting glimpses at provocative cherry tart, chocolate mint, baked redcurrants, warm cassis and wild blueberry scents plus suggestions of lilacs, cinnamon stick and Indian spices. Medium to full-bodied, the palate absolutely explodes with vibrant red and black fruit bursts and tons of exotic spice accents, framed by super ripe, super firm tannins and a lovely line of freshness, finishing very long.

The Cos d’Estournel 2015 Blanc has an attractive bouquet with fresh green apple, apricot blossom and a touch of wet stone—to be honest, almost exactly how I remember it from barrel. The palate is medium-bodied with a pleasing, quite sharp and lively entry. This 2015 is underpinned by a fine line of acidity, a little spicier in bottle than in barrel, with veins of lemongrass enlivening the finish. This is a very commendable white Bordeaux that could be broached now, though I would prefer to leave it another couple of years. Anticipated maturity: 2019 - 2030.

Easily one of the most successful wine in Saint Estèphe in 2015, Cos d'Estournel is just gorgeous. Elements of exoticism appear on the bouquet, followed by generous black cherry, smoke, leather, licorice, menthol and mocha. Naturally, it will be many years before the 2015 is ready to offer a truly complete drinking experience, but it is superb even in the early going. The 2015 was bottled in July 2017. vinous.com, February 2018

Antonio Galloni

With its exotic architecture and distinctive, powerful style, Cos d'Estournel is one of the most famous and sought-after Bordeaux year in, year out. A large-scaled Cos with great intensity, intense red and black fruits, a whiff of gravelly minerality. Complex. Palate is dense, with robust but quite sweet-edges tannins and good fruit purity. Elegantly handled but still sporting St. Estephe power. (75% Cabernet Sauvnignon, 24% Merlot, 1% Cabernet Franc.)

Extremely dark crimson. Lovely spice and breadth. Hint of tobacco leaf with lots of ripe fruit. Very comfortable. A lovely pair of slippers. Real tension and ripeness - great combo. Nothing forced. Ethereal and builds towards the end. Certainly has the graphite ingredient. 13.4%. Drink 2024-2040.
