Tasting Notes and Scores

96 DWWA

Gorgeous nose full of exotic spices, candied fruit, orange, apricot and honeyed brioche. Lovely unctuous texture here, it's fat but smooth - like thick smooth fruity caramel, quite defined and straight but with a roundness and generosity with pineapple, mango, violet even giving an appealing florality, and these lovely almost bitter orange edges. It's still a bit young but with great vibrancy right now, acidity which gives energy and life all the way through. Lifted and bright.

The pale lemon-gold colored 2019 Coutet is a thrill ride from the get-go, exploding from the glass with fantastically intense scents of tangerine peel, lime blossoms and lemon marmalade over a core of pineapple upside-down cake, candied ginger, ripe apricots and clover honey plus suggestions of chanterelles and musk perfume. The palate is equally electric and exhilarating, prancing around the palate with a whole myriad of candied citrus, stone fruit and citrus flavors, charged by a racy backbone of acidity, finishing beautifully textured and with an epically long firework display of minerals. Apart from all that, it is pretty darn delicious.

95 JA-I

Golden yellow in colour, concentrated and enticing. The focus is on texture and architecture rather than flavour on the first beats, but it opens to show enjoyable quince, lime, white flowers. Rich through the mid palate with welcome slate scrape and mandarin zest bitterness on the finish.

The 2019 Coutet has a luscious bouquet with scents of dried honey, honeysuckle and orange pith, intense and well defined. The palate is built around Coutet's trademark line of acidity, an underlying zestiness cutting through the unctuous honeyed fruit with a welcome orange rind and marmalade note on the persistent finish. Excellent. June 2020

A sweet, dense and rich white with oily character. Full and layered. Extremely long. Spicy. Very dense. June 2020

The 2019 Coutet is a high toned and very aromatic mid-weight wine with notes of pineapple, passion fruit and exotic white flowers. The 2019 is very pretty but a bit eccentric, especially in its aromatics, which are somewhat diffuse. June 2020

17.5 JL

75% Sémillon, 23% Sauvignon Blanc, 2% Muscadelle. Barrel sample. Cloudy. Bitter-orange citrus notes on the nose and palate. Extremely pure, the fruit and texture suave and gourmand. Zesty and long at the same time with a tangy, botrytised note on the finish. Lovely weight and balance. (JL)

Tasted blind. Deep gold. Both tangy and very sweet and rich indeed. A bit blustering rather than subtle. Almost sickly! (JR)
