2019 La Dame de Montrose, Saint-Estephe

Colour: Red
Vintage: 2019
Region: Bordeaux, Saint-Estephe
% Alcohol: 14.50

Montrose is one of the greatest estates in Bordeaux. Its spectacular terroir in the prime sector of St Estephe has been brought to its pinnacle by owner Martin Bouygues and his team, leading to a run of sublime performances over a decade long; in a number of these vintages, it stands scrutiny as a potential ‘wine of the vintage’. Saint-Estephe is the Médoc’s most northerly commune, lying just beyond the confines of Pauillac, and stretches up the Gironde estuary, a mere 50 kilometre swim away from the Atlantic Ocean. The soil boasts a larger proportion of clay than the rest of the Médoc which, in the past, has lent the wines a traditional austerity requiring lengthier aging than their cousins further south. With climate change, however, where long periods of intense sunshine and near drought conditions have become the norm, vines planted in the commune’s moisture-retaining clay have thrived and few exemplify this better than the exceptional Chateau Montrose.

The 2019 La Dame de Montrose is a touch richer and more giving than its 2016 counterpart, delivering aromas of dark berries, cherries and plum liqueur along with licorice and petals. Medium to full-bodied, supple and fleshy, it's velvety and expressive out of the gates, reflecting the dominant presence of ripe Merlot in the blend.

48% Cabernet Sauvignon, 45% Merlot, 4% Petit Verdot, 3% Cabernet Franc. Deepest purple-crimson. Open and fragrant with cassis and elderberry. A light dusting of oak adds more savour than sweetness. Finely textured and utterly mouth-watering. The acidity is notable but fully integrated. Superb tannic finesse and a long, dry, fragrant finish, the alcohol also well-integrated. (JH)

48% Cabernet Sauvignon, 45% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc, 4% Petit Verdot. Barrel sample. Cabernet expression particularly marked, especially on the palate. Dark fruit with a savoury edge on the nose, the palate lively and lifted with fresher flavours. Dark fruit again with a minerally edge. Firm, dry finish. GV ? (JL)

Tasted blind. Youthful crimson. Ripe fruit. Good impact. Assertive. Quite a bit of tannin underneath and some persistence. Even a bit of alcoholic warmth on the end! (JR)
