2017 Domaine de Chevalier, Rouge Cru Classe, Pessac-Leognan

Colour: Red
Vintage: 2017
Region: Bordeaux, Pessac-Leognan
% Alcohol: 13.00

One of the finest and best value estates in all of Bordeaux, Domaine de Chevalier has long produced exceptional wines: their red delivers masses of dense, well-structured Pessac character at a fantastic price. Domaine de Chevalier is one large vineyard estate that can be divided into almost 100 sub plots, all with their own characteristics due to the complexity of soils and naturally gentle rise-and-fall of the landscape – which also benefits from the temperature-regulating effects of the surrounding forests. From these picturesque vineyards to the south of the city Domaine de Chevalier produces red and white wines which make them a leading light in Bordeaux. They have also remained very reasonably priced – while continuing to achieve excellent ratings. Along with Grand Puy Lacoste, it is one of our go-to, great value clarets. Whilst their wines can be approachable relatively young, they have the structure and stuffing to age superbly for decades.

Tasting Notes and Scores

96 JS

Lots of blueberry, hot-stone, slate and walnut aromas. Terracotta, too. Iodine. Full-bodied, round and dense with layers of fine tannins. Lovely depth and intensity. Extremely long and focused. Needs three or four years of bottle age just to start.

A gem that readers should snatch up is unquestionably the 2017 Domaine De Chevalier, which is based on 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot, and 5% Petit Verdot that spent 18 months in just 35% new French oak. This deeply colored effort offers classic blackberry and blackcurrant fruits as well as medium to full body, complex notes of tobacco, gravelly earth, and chocolate, beautiful tannins, and a great finish. This is a classy, flawlessly balanced 2017 that offers up pleasure even today, yet it will keep for 30+ years. Having just had the good fortune to drink a bottle of the 1920, now at 100 years after the vintage, the longevity of this cuvee should not be underestimated.

A BI favourite and top performer year after year, Domaine de Chevalier often punches well above its weight with real Graves quality. Pretty dark and backwards on the nose. Fine, elegant tannins build a frame of solid, rich and ripe fruit. As it develops in the mouth it softens and the juicy side is released, creating a charming, mouthwatering sensation. There is real drive and energy here which builds to a very pretty, raspberry and mineral driven finish. Very effortless but a serious wine. - April 2018

Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2017 Domaine de Chevalier opens with a cedary waft giving way to a good core of crushed black currants, blackberries and mulberries with suggestions of black truffles, tilled soil and black olives plus a hint of smoked meats. Medium-bodied with a good, solid frame of ripe, fine-grained tannins and oodles of freshness, it is elegantly fruited yet well sustained on the mid-palate and long finish. - Lisa Perrotti-Brown, erobertparker.com, April 2018

The 2017 Domaine de Chevalier was impressive from barrel. Bottled since June 2019, it has clearly retained that gorgeous nose with delineated scents of blackberry, black olive, shucked oyster shells and orange rind. Wonderful vigour here. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, lithe and very focused. It is not a powerful nor indeed a long-term Domaine de Chevalier, ergo my lower score than 2016. Bottom line is that it is just a delicious wine to consume. Still, it will offer 20 years of drinking pleasure. Tasted twice with consistent notes. www.vinous,com

The 2017 Domaine de Chevalier is rather dense and powerful, but it is also not quite put together. Specifically, the focus and delineation that are such signatures of this wine are not present today. There is something about the wine's balance that is just not right. The coarse tannins and disjointed feel suggest fruit that may have been shocked during the April frost. Tasted three times. - vinous.com, May 2018

Deep crimson. A little leafy, fragrant in a herbaceous style. Firm and chewy. Tongue-tied at the moment but there's finesse in the dark, dusty fruit and tender graphite notes. Smooth and polished yet compact tannins. Savoury, dry, subtle aftertaste. - Julia Harding, jancisrobinson.com, April 2018
