Tasting Notes and Scores

99-100 JS

This is a remarkable wine with a density of fruit that reminds me of a Montrachet from a great vintage. it’s full bodied, dense and rich -- almost oily -- but then it turns bright and fresh with a powerful backbone of acidity. A marvel.

Offering up brilliant aromatics of grilled grapefruit, melon, crushed stone, and grilled citrus, the 2010 Domaine De Chevalier Blanc is medium to full-bodied, bright, and fresh on the palate, with a focused and lively profile that’s very much in the style of this domaine and vintage. It's an outstanding expression of Pessac-Léognan Blanc that will evolve gracefully over the coming two decades. Drink 2025-2045.

Tasting younger than its 12 years in bottle, this vintage exudes superior opulence to the 2017, but is also tauter. Aeration yields pristine notes of quince, pear, apricot, lime and white pepper, so you experience exotic and cool fruit with wet stone minerality on the finish. On a slow evolutionary track, it will gain in complexity over the next decade. Versatile food pairings could include pasta carbonara, organic chicken with orange rind, or lobster in a butter and lemon sauce. A superlative white, but decant first.

Cru Classe Pessac-Leognan (60% harvest, 40hl/ha, 14.3%, 1/3 New) [SB85/15SM] Pale colour; fresh, zesty sauvignon nose; both rich and vigorous in constitution; dry, generous wine, very ripely flavoured, but this ripeness supported by a fine, firm acidity; a broad, quite "fat" style for the property’s white wine; juicy, spicy, complex, discreetly oaky, full of both ripe fruit and very mineral aromas; Burgundian in its breadth, rich and linear at the same time; pure, taut, aromatic and with great length of aftertaste. Grand scale Domaine de Chevalier white. 2018-35+ [M.Schuster, Bordeaux Mar/Apr 2011]

The second year running that a Domaine de Chevalier white has featured in my wines of the year (last year it was the 2014), but it is just such a consistently brilliant choice if you are looking for a white Bordeaux that is going to deliver both with food and without. The first hints of quince and waxy lemon arriving at 12 years old as it slides towards tertiary, with the fruit now fully white pear and peach, with touches of frangipane and flaky pastry. Served out of magnum, Olivier Bernard owner.

A backward style of wine with notes of honeyed pears, subtle citrus, candle wax, orange zest and lemon butter, this medium to full-bodied, rich wine has terrific acidity and a long, long finish. Anticipated maturity: 2020-2050.

Tasted at the UGC and at the property, the Domaine de Chevalier Blanc has a very refined bouquet with hints of lemon curd, apple blossom and a touch of French patisserie. There is still a little oak to be integrated. The palate is medium-bodied with very fine balance, perfectly pitched acidity and subtle notes of apple blossom and white truffle. This is a very suave white Graves, complex and cerebral with a long, slightly nutty/smoky finish. Tasted November 2012.

Very pure, with a stony frame to the straw, verbena and gooseberry notes. Superfresh, but not overly tangy, with a long, suave finish.
