Domaine de Chevalier, Blanc Cru Classe, Pessac-Leognan

Colour: White
Vintage: 2011
Region: Bordeaux, Pessac-Leognan

One of the finest and best value estates in all of Bordeaux, Domaine de Chevalier has long produced exceptional wines: their red delivers masses of dense, well-structured Pessac character at a fantastic price. Domaine de Chevalier is one large vineyard estate that can be divided into almost 100 sub plots, all with their own characteristics due to the complexity of soils and naturally gentle rise-and-fall of the landscape – which also benefits from the temperature-regulating effects of the surrounding forests. From these picturesque vineyards to the south of the city Domaine de Chevalier produces red and white wines which make them a leading light in Bordeaux. They have also remained very reasonably priced – while continuing to achieve excellent ratings. Along with Grand Puy Lacoste, it is one of our go-to, great value clarets. Whilst their wines can be approachable relatively young, they have the structure and stuffing to age superbly for decades.

Tasting Notes and Scores

97-98 JS

Amazing nose of dried fruits from peaches to apples to mangos. Pink grapefruit too. Full and very powerful white with an incredible length and intensity. It's like a beautiful block of velvet in your mouth. It goes on for minutes. It becomes so mineraly and subtly fruity at the end. Turns just to honey. Wow.

A blend of 85% Sauvignon Bland and 15% Semillon, the Domaine de Chevalier Blanc has a very taut bouquet with scents of granite, lemon rind and a touch of white peach and chalk dust. Great focus and intensity although it takes time to unwind. The palate is medium-bodied with a lovely elegant white peach and a drop of wild honey, very good acidity and a caressing, vanilla-tinged finish that shows great length. This is better than the red this year. Tasted April 2012.

Bordeaux Index

Very high-toned today, with a whiff of talcum powder giving way to bright sweet pea and lime notes. The tightly wound finish lets herb and fleur de sel flecks peek out, but there's serious length in reserve.-J.M.

17.5-1 JR

Drink 2015-2025 Inviting, creamy mealy citrus aroma. Lemon tart, oak delicate on the nose. Reassuring. Firm and savoury and rich on the palate but with great acidity. Greengage and grapefruit complementing each other. Power and freshness combined. Concentrated citrus purity on the end. Good length. (JH)
