2007 Ducru-Beaucaillou 2eme Cru Classe, Saint-Julien

Colour: Red
Vintage: 2007
Region: Bordeaux, Saint-Julien
% Alcohol: 13.00

The vineyards at Ducru run almost down to the Gironde, lying between those of Beychevelle to the north and Latour, in the commune of Pauillac, to the south. This highly regarded St. Julien is one of Bordeaux's true aristocrats with a history of wine making heading back to the mid-fourteenth century. Given a deuxiemes cru classification in 1855, the château is rightly held in similar regard to the neighbouring Leoville estates. However it is the modern era (post 1990 and particularly in the 2000s and onwards) that is really becoming the defining period for Ducru Beaucaillou. Since 2008, it carries an average Wine Advocate score of 95+, a sure sign that this is a winegrower at the very top of his game. Compound this reputed estate with its flamboyant, charismatic estate manager Bruno Borie and you have a winning partnership. Packing bundles of passion into each vintage Robert Parker comments that “Bruno Borie has done a remarkable job at Ducru Beaucaillou…if you haven't noticed yet, it's time to jump on the bandwagon.

Tasting Notes and Scores

93 JD

A vintage that continues to show brilliantly, the 2007 Château Ducru-Beaucaillou shines for its up-front elegance and purity. Classic notes of ripe dark fruits, cedary herbs, tobacco, and acacia flowers all emerge on the nose, and it's medium-bodied, with silky tannins, a layered, ripe mouthfeel, and a great finish. It's not going to be the longest-lived Ducru out there, but it's absolutely singing today.

The 2007 Ducru Beaucaillou has a generous red cherry and wild strawberry bouquet armed with very good fruit concentration. The palate is medium-bodied, fleshy in the mouth with slightly lower acidity than its peers. Harmonious and velvety smooth, there is a fair amount of new oak here, but it is very well integrated with a caressing finish. It still has that Burgundian flair. This is excellent considering the growing season. Tasted March 2015.

Deep garnet in color, the 2007 Ducru-Beaucaillou reveals forest floor, fallen leaves and new leather notions to begin, opening out to offer notes of baked plums, dried mulberries, cassis and iron ore plus a hint of charcoal. Medium-bodied, the palate has a firm, study frame of chewy tannins and oodles of freshness, lifting all those earthy/savory flavors to a good long finish.

(90% cabernet sauvignon and 10% merlot) Deep red-ruby. Crushed cassis, blackberry, violet, licorice and bitter chocolate on the very fresh nose. Then dense but light on its feet, with lovely ripeness to the silky flavors of black fruits, clove and bitter chocolate. Attractively sweet on the back end, with fine-grained tannins and a suggestion of fig. This boasts an almost chocolatey ripeness and good minerality for the year and surprises with its firm structure.

Robert Parker''s Wine Advocate 27/04/2010

An outstanding effort from proprietor Bruno Borie, the 2007 Ducru exhibits sweet black currant fruit, licorice, lead pencil shaving, and wood spice characteristics along with medium to full body, a velvety mouthfeel, and outstanding density as well as richness. It is a strong effort for the vintage, and should drink well for 15+ years.

Correct and luscious. Sweet and minty with a dry end. Lots of ‘minerality’! Real freshness. And length. (JR)

Slightly veiled and musty at first, then the oak comes out. Some indistinct berry fruit and, unusually, white pepper. In the mouth there’s decent stuffing for a 2007, and refinement to the structure. A good result for the vintage, but ultimately it is soft-centred and does not have a great deal more to reveal. (AH)

‘April was gloriously warm and dry, but unfortunately the weather changed to cool and wet conditions in May. June was warm but July was rather cool and August was cool and damp. All in all, the vintage required extreme efforts by our teams to offset the ever-present disease pressure in the vineyards. The vintage was saved by a warm and dry fall that finally allowed the grapes to ripen in favourable conditions.’ Harvest: 24 September – 7 October. 90% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Merlot. 18 months in new French oak. Mid garnet with brick rim. Cigar box, black olive and sweet tobacco on the nose. Slightly leafy. Surprisingly rich in the mouth, smooth, thickly textured and generous, lots of fruit and plenty of freshness, sweet-sour on the finish. A little bit earthy. The tannins are firm and holding the fruit. Later in the glass it became leaner and drier. (JH)
