2015 Ducru-Beaucaillou 2eme Cru Classe, Saint-Julien

Colour: Red
Vintage: 2015
Region: Bordeaux, Saint-Julien
% Alcohol: 13.50

The vineyards at Ducru run almost down to the Gironde, lying between those of Beychevelle to the north and Latour, in the commune of Pauillac, to the south. This highly regarded St. Julien is one of Bordeaux's true aristocrats with a history of wine making heading back to the mid-fourteenth century. Given a deuxiemes cru classification in 1855, the château is rightly held in similar regard to the neighbouring Leoville estates. However it is the modern era (post 1990 and particularly in the 2000s and onwards) that is really becoming the defining period for Ducru Beaucaillou. Since 2008, it carries an average Wine Advocate score of 95+, a sure sign that this is a winegrower at the very top of his game. Compound this reputed estate with its flamboyant, charismatic estate manager Bruno Borie and you have a winning partnership. Packing bundles of passion into each vintage Robert Parker comments that “Bruno Borie has done a remarkable job at Ducru Beaucaillou…if you haven't noticed yet, it's time to jump on the bandwagon.

Tasting Notes and Scores

98 AG

The 2015 Ducru-Beaucaillou is phenomenally great. Inky, powerful and explosive, the 2015 pulses with energy in all of its dimensions. Creme de cassis, blackberry jam, graphite, smoke, leather and incense, along with the wine's muscular tannins, convey an impression of brooding intensity. The 2015 has been nothing short of sensational on the two occasions I have tasted it so far. Readers should be prepared to be patient. Don't miss it! vinous.com, February 2018

Composed of 95% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Merlot. Medium to deep garnet-purple colored, the 2015 Ducru-Beaucaillou is provocatively and profoundly scented of chocolate-covered cherries, fresh black currants, crushed blueberries and licorice with touches of cigar box, roses and violets plus hints of black pepper and tapenade. Medium to full-bodied, rich and sultry with tons of seductive layers and firm, wonderfully velvety tannins, it has a very long, multilayered finish. - Lisa Perrotti-Brown, Interim Issue Mid-February 2018, The Wine Advocate

Aromas of oyster shell, iron and currants. Hints of iodine. Full-bodied, very tight and focused. Love the finish of sandalwood, cinnamon, violets and lavender. Wonderful tannin texture. Linear and driven. Drink in 2022.

Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2015 Ducru-Beaucaillou rocks up with flamboyant baked black plums, crème de cassis, blueberry compote and chocolate-covered cherries scents plus hints of cinnamon stick, black tea and candied violets. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is laden with black fruit preserves and spicy accents, with a firm, velvety frame and finishing with great length and perfume. Ideally, I'd give it another year to fan out just a bit more, but it is coming around nicely and is already fantastically delicious!

The 2015 Château Ducru-Beaucaillou is up-front, ripe, and incredibly sexy, yet it holds onto a terrific sense of balance and elegance. Crème de cassis, minty herbs, tobacco, and violet notes all define the aromatics, and it hits the palate with medium to full-bodied richness, elegant, polished tannins, and beautiful overall purity. From a hot vintage that saw rain at the end of the year, it's not a massive or over-the-top effort in any way, and it certainly offers plenty of pleasure even today, although it’s still quite young and unevolved. If push comes to shove, I think the 2014 is slightly more successful. Give bottles another 2-4 years and enjoy over the following 25-30 years.

One of the top Second Growths, Ducru has been run with great success by the inimtiable Bruno Borie since 2004. Really pure, vineyard-character nose – dense and coiled but with immense style and complexity. Real intensity, hugely-satisfying ripe black fruit, blackcurrant, wild strawberry, spice and very fine tannins. So satisfying, already drinkable! This has enormous potential. (95% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Merlot.)

The 2015 Ducru-Beaucaillou, a blend of 95% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Merlot, has a very refined bouquet with precise blackberry, cedar, crushed flowers and incense that blossom in the glass. This is immediately seductive. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grain tannin. This is very refined and sensual, the acidity extremely well judged and lending tension from start to finish. Notes of black fruit, allspice, a touch of graphite and subtle mineral tones surface toward the finish. This is a stunning Ducru Beaucaillou that deserves several years in bottle. Anticipated maturity: 2023 - 2050. - Feb 2018

95% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Merlot. IPT 75, pH 3.89, 35 hl/ha. Highest proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon ever. 100% new oak. From 2003 the wine has been aged for 18 months in barrel.
Very deep. Lifted and fresh. Very correct and unforced. Very sweet. Only just not too sweet… Transparent. Very expressive. Lively and fresh but a bit sinewy. 13.42%

Youthful, sappy oak and toast aromas, rich fruit and complex spice on the palate. Fine tannins that are absolutely ready to drink. Starting to show liquorice and leather, plus an almost caramelised or torrefaction sort of aroma. Despite the super-ripe style, there is lovely savoury snap on the finish, and long, herb-infused persistence. (RH)

'A warm spring with a heatwave in May gave way to early, perfect flowering. Early June showers replenished water tables before the dry, hot conditions of June and July. 2015 is ranked one of the hottest summers in history, in terms of accumulated sunshine hours; however, there were no excesses of heat and the night-time temperatures remained moderate to cool, which helped to preserve acidity. August rains re-invigorated the vines but did not dilute the fruit. Temperatures were cooler in September, while mid-month rains followed by a dry period from the second fortnight of September facilitated the final ripening phase.' Harvest: 21 September – 6 October. 95% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Merlot. 18 months in new French oak. Surprisingly evolved colour with some brick at the rim. Cassis and cassis leaf, with dark but fresh fruit on the nose and lots of savoury black-olive flavour. Much bigger and richer in the mouth than the nose predicts. Big, oaky and thickly textured, glossy. Powerful but balanced, generous. (JH)
