Tasting Notes and Scores
Robert Parker's Wine Advocate 29/04/2005
This is an excellent effort boasting notes of cedar, spice box, earth, and red and black currants in a medium-bodied, elegant style that exhibits the hand prints of Lafite Rothschild. A pure wine, it should age nicely for 10-15 years. Duhart is a chateau to watch as the Rothschilds (of Lafite) are making serious investments and pushing full-throttle to upgrade the quality and image of this estate.

(75% cabernet sauvignon, 22% merlot and 3% cab franc) Full ruby-red. Perfumed aromas of cassis, licorice, bitter chocolate and mint, with a high-toned note of camphor. Medicinal black cherry flavors show a restrained sweetness. This came across as distinctly suppler and sweeter than the Carruades de Lafite, with more weight and breadth. Slightly herbal but not vegetal. Brisk acids give this a slightly hard edge on the finish, but there are also lingering berry and mint flavors. Duhart reportedly harvested on the late side in 2002.

This Lafite-managed property seems to go from strength to strength and this was, for its standing, the most impressive wine tasted at Lafite. Big, serious, essence of Cabernet (75 per cent Sauvignon, three per cent Franc for the first time) nose. Really bright, deep, glossy, healthy colour. Lovely balance. Tannins extremely well hidden. Velvety. Dry finish. The reverse of a wine whose appeal lies only on ripe sweetness. Very correct, perhaps very slightly willowy, but beautifully perfumed. Almost opulently full on the palate. Lovely for relatively early drinking. Charming. After my tasting winemaker Charles Chevalier called it 'the wine that speaks to me most this vintage'. (JR)
