2018 Echo de Lynch-Bages, Pauillac

Colour: Red
Vintage: 2018
Region: Bordeaux, Pauillac
% Alcohol: 13.00

Is there a wine anywhere in the world that can boast the global affection and recognition of Château Lynch Bages? Once known as the “poor man’s Mouton” this iconic Pauillac now plays second fiddle to no one, residing as it does in the finest collections and on the most coveted wine lists in the world. Lynch Bages is surely one of the most underrated chateaux when it comes to the 1855 classification of Bordeaux wines, belying its fifth growth status and producing outstanding wines year on year. Under the Cazes family, first Jean-Michel and now his son Jean-Charles, the estate has seen massive investment - most notably a huge, modern new winemaking facility - and the rewards have been duly reaped. Stylistically, Lynch Bages is quintessential Pauillac, highly consistent in quality, with the trademark regional Cabernet Sauvignon character of black fruit, pencil shavings and leather.

Tasting Notes and Scores

93-95 JD

The 2018 Echo De Lynch-Bages is the second wine of Lynch Bages and is 62% Cabernet Sauvignon, 36% Merlot, and the rest Cabernet Franc brought up all in once-used barrels. Cassis, graphite, lead pencil, and graphite notes all emerge from this deep, shockingly concentrated wine that has full-bodied richness, ripe, present tannins, and a great finish. The stats on this second wine are telling, and it’s 13.9% alcohol, 3.57 pH, and an IPT of 87. It's one serious, blockbuster-styled second wine that shows how successful some of the second wines in the vintage are. - jebdunnuck.com, May 2019

Very layered and dense second wine of Lynch this year. Medium to full body, juicy fruit and polished and chewy tannins. Will need time. - jamessuckling.com, April 2019

The 2018 Echo de Lynch Bages is an attractive, fruity wine to drink now and over the next decade or so. Sweet red berries, blood orange, mint, spice and pomegranate are nicely pushed forward in this attractive, lithe Pauillac. A few hours of air does wonders here.

Composed of 62% Cabernet Sauvignon, 36% Merlot and 2% Cabernet Franc and without any new oak, the very deep purple-black colored 2018 Echo de Lynch Bages rolls seductively out of the glass with fragrant notes of candied violets, rose hip tea and fragrant soil over a core of crushed blackberries, warm blackcurrants and kirsch plus wafts of chocolate mint and crushed rocks. Full, rich, wonderfully concentrated and well structured, it has a solid backbone of firm, grainy tannins and bold freshness, finishing long.

Spiced and complex with a cola and black fruit character. Immediate power, firm tannins and crunchy red fruit. - April 2019

Bordeaux Index

88-90 NM

The 2018 Echo de Lynch Bages is matured for 12 months in one-year-old oak, as usual. I find this much more restrained and better defined on the nose compared directly with the Verso de Haut-Batailley, offering pure blackberry and cassis fruit laced with minerals and pressed violets. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannin, layers of slightly toasty black fruit laced with tobacco and black pepper, and a fine, cohesive finish. A little denser in style for Echo, but well-crafted, and it should give 12 to 15 years of drinking pleasure.

Inky core with bright purple rim. Sweeter on the nose than the Haut-Batailley just tasted. Cassis and a touch of blueberry. Rounded and smooth but less pretty than the Haut-Batailley Verso, perhaps more long-lived.Julia Harding, jancisrobinson.com, April 2019
