This 6.68-hectare vineyard is situated between Trotanoy and Latour à Pomerol on gravel and sand-based soils. Average vine age is 34 years, and yields were 45 hectoliters per hectare. It is aging in 70% new and 30% second year barrels, where it will stay for an estimated 16 months. The wine has 14.9% alcohol and is blended of 92% Merlot and 8% Cabernet Franc. Deep purple-black colored, the 2018 Feytit Clinet is a little shy to begin, unfurling to reveal wild blueberries, warm plums and black cherries with hints of violets, iron ore, pencil shavings and damp soil. Full-bodied, rich and concentrated, it has a firm, velvety texture and bags of opulent fruit, finishing earthy. About 18,000 bottles will be made.

The 2018 Feytit-Clinet is a limpid purple hue. The bouquet is backward compared to other Pomerols that I tasted, biding its time and gradually opening to reveal black cherries, blueberry, melted tar and licorice scents all vying for attention. The palate is very smooth on the entry, with a fine bead of acidity. Sweet black fruit and licorice beg for your attention and dovetail into a saline finish. This is a very classy Feytit-Clinet from proprietor Jeremy Chasseuil.

Proprietor Jérémy Chasseuil turned out another gorgeous wine at Feytit-Clinet. Although the 2018 does not have the explosive energy of some past vintages, in exchange it will drink well with minimal cellaring. Cedar, tobacco, gravel, dried flowers, mint, spice and incense build as this richly textured, layered Pomerol shows off its class. As always, Feytit-Clinet is one of the most virile, potent wines of Pomerol and all of Bordeaux, for that matter. The blend is 92% Merlot and 8% Cabernet Franc. Tasted three times.

I remember enjoying a bottle of a very much older vintage at the Renzland brothers’ Chez Max in Richmond – was it a century ago? This was a property nurtured by Richards Walford, late lamented. Let's see what it's like now! Jeremy Chasseuil has apparently been hard at work on the property, with its relatively high proportion of gravel. Deep dark glowing crimson – one of the darkest colours of any of this collection of 2018 Grand Cercle wines. Most unfortunately there is mild TCA on this wine (even though the cork smells pristine) and the finish is less luscious than I feel it probably should be. But there is ambitiously concentrated fruit on the mid palate, which certainly seems worth 16.5. I'd really like to taste a perfect bottle of this. I'm going to be generous in my scoring and ignore the TCA. (JR)

Barrel sample. Black with the narrowest of purple rims. A little riper on the nose than the Clos René just tasted. Darker, more stewed fruit. Firm and dry in texture but cool and fresh on the finish. A little spirity on the nose. Concentrated but just the right side of intense. (JH)
