2001 Chateau Grand-Puy-Lacoste 5eme Cru Classe, Pauillac

Colour: Red
Vintage: 2001
Region: Bordeaux, Pauillac
% Alcohol: 13.00

Chateau Grand Puy Lacoste is one of our perennial favourite producers and a Chateau that creates consistently top quality wines year on year. Grand Puy Lacoste is owned and run by Xavier Borie and is a Fifth Growth Pauillac estate; however, this Chateau has been outperforming its 5th Growth status for many years, producing wines of exceptional quality and great elegance with rich black fruits, epitomizing great Pauillac. “Readers will know that I hold Grand Puy Lacoste up as the bastion of quintessential Pauillac” says Neal Martin and we certainly believe that nothing – outside of Chateau Latour – actually delivers that truly inimitable graphite, gravel and cedar character that typifies this rare region quite like Grand Puy Lacoste.

Tasting Notes and Scores

93 NM

The 2001 Grand Puy-Lacoste is a vintage that I have not tasted for a decade. It’s showing some signs of bricking on the rim. The bouquet does not quite have the intensity of the previous vintage, but it unfolds nicely to reveal a mélange of red and black fruit, tertiary aromas, gravel and cedar. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy black fruit, grippy and much more youthful than the 2000, though it does not quite have the same complexity and terroir expression on the elegant finish. Good full red-ruby. Pure aromas of cassis, cherry and bitter chocolate. Sweet but quite firm, with lovely clarity of cherry and licorice flavor and compelling inner-mouth perfume. A firmly structured wine that offers terrific precision and persistence.

From an assemblage of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 28% Merlot and 2% Cabernet Franc, the perfume offers cedar, tobacco. black and red plums and forest floor notes. Medium/full bodied, classic, round, Pauillac textures and a spice filled, red and black finish are the hallmarks of this wine. This is a forward style of Grand Puy Lacoste and while there is no hurry to consume it, there is no reason to wait. Nov 2011

A deep ruby/purple color is accompanied by this property's tell-tale cassis characteristics. Medium-bodied and monolithic, with fine ripeness as well as depth along with light to moderate tannin in the finish, the 2001 Grand-Puy-Lacoste should be at its peak between 2006-2014.

Good deep black crimson. Very nicely balanced and evolved. Very complete. Lifted and beautifully balanced. Very fresh and precise. Not as concentrated as some vintages of this wine (almost light!) but lovely now. JR March 2012
