2004 Chateau Grand-Puy-Lacoste 5eme Cru Classe, Pauillac

Colour: Red
Vintage: 2004
Region: Bordeaux, Pauillac
% Alcohol: 13.00

Chateau Grand Puy Lacoste is one of our perennial favourite producers and a Chateau that creates consistently top quality wines year on year. Grand Puy Lacoste is owned and run by Xavier Borie and is a Fifth Growth Pauillac estate; however, this Chateau has been outperforming its 5th Growth status for many years, producing wines of exceptional quality and great elegance with rich black fruits, epitomizing great Pauillac. “Readers will know that I hold Grand Puy Lacoste up as the bastion of quintessential Pauillac” says Neal Martin and we certainly believe that nothing – outside of Chateau Latour – actually delivers that truly inimitable graphite, gravel and cedar character that typifies this rare region quite like Grand Puy Lacoste.

Tasting Notes and Scores

Subtle aromas of currant, berries and vanilla follow through to a full-bodied palate, with silky tannins and a long finish. Builds on the finish. Serious for the vintage. James Suckling

Well, first things first: it does not smell like a white Burgundy (I am sure that must have been something with my glass!) No, this is straight down the line Cabernet Sauvignon, good ripeness, blackberry, cedar, pain grille and cigar box. The palate has firm tannins, off-dry and conservative without the weight of a more favourable vintage, but very focused, rather haughty on the dry finish, aloof even. Give it a few years and it will deign you with its presence. Drink 2015-2025. Tasted November 2008. www.robertparker.com

-Parker's Wine Buyer's Guide No 7

This excellent offering displays sweet black currant notes intermixed with notions of licorice, scorched earth, and spicy herbs. Medium-bodied and elegant with abundant fruit on the attack and mid-palate, and light to moderate tannin, it should drink well for 10-15 years.

Medium-deep red. Ripe aromas of plum, leather, chocolate and mellow nutty oak; can't match the 2005 or 2006 for lift. Then supple, sweet and accessible, with ripe but cooler flavors framed by harmonious acidity. Not a particularly powerful or structured wine but the tannins are suave and the finish offers good smoky persistence. This has turned out nicely.

Good bright color. Cooler aromas of cassis and mint lifted by a floral element. Juicy, sweet and precise but shows a somewhat raw inky, grapey quality and a distinct minty nuance. A cooler-style wine that finishes with slightly drying tannins.
