2014 Chateau Grand-Puy-Lacoste 5eme Cru Classe, Pauillac

Colour: Red
Vintage: 2014
Region: Bordeaux, Pauillac
% Alcohol: 13.50

Chateau Grand Puy Lacoste is one of our perennial favourite producers and a Chateau that creates consistently top quality wines year on year. Grand Puy Lacoste is owned and run by Xavier Borie and is a Fifth Growth Pauillac estate; however, this Chateau has been outperforming its 5th Growth status for many years, producing wines of exceptional quality and great elegance with rich black fruits, epitomizing great Pauillac. “Readers will know that I hold Grand Puy Lacoste up as the bastion of quintessential Pauillac” says Neal Martin and we certainly believe that nothing – outside of Chateau Latour – actually delivers that truly inimitable graphite, gravel and cedar character that typifies this rare region quite like Grand Puy Lacoste.

Tasting Notes and Scores

97 JS

This red shows lots of redcurrants and fresh flowers on the nose. It’s full-bodied with juicy tannins and a long, flavorful finish. Needs three or four years to resolve some of the tannins. Beautiful cabernet character, but already a joy to taste.

The 2014 Grand Puy Lacoste is superb. Dark, dense and inviting, the 2014 possesses remarkable depth and richness. Black cherry, plum, smoke, licorice and tobacco all develop in the glass, but it is the overall feel that is most impressive. Silky, polished tannins nicely balance the wine's overt personality. In short, the 2014 has it all. Don't miss it. This is a knockout wine from proprietor François-Xavier Borie.

The 2014 Grand-Puy Lacoste has a bouquet with blackberry, boysenberry, mint and graphite, well defined and focused. It does not have to try too hard to give so much pleasure. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, very crisp acidity, beautifully proportioned with a veneer of top quality new oak that will need three or four years to be fully subsumed. But the purity and elegance of this Pauillac cannot be denied – a quite brilliant contribution to the 2014 vintage. Tasted blind at the annual Southwold tasting. - vinous.com, March 2018

Nice aromatic intensity on the nose, full and forward. High toned, bright and lively but balanced giving quite a fun, energetic expression. It's lean and streamlined, not layered, doesn't venture too far from the centre with an element of tension about it keeping it straight and serious but this has charm and appeal too. A solid effort that's juicy and likeable and not trying too hard. Mineral grip on the finish bringing you back to the terroir. Salty with graphite. Something quite nice about this, still with strength.

Dark cassis fruit, with pencil lead, flint and crushed mint leaf, reserved and savoury and full of understated pleasure. This is starting to tip towards tertiary as the drinking window opens, but GPL is a wine that keeps delivering over decades, and this Cabernet dominant fruit isn't going anywhere. Sleek and finessed, and just a little bit subdued. 75% new oak. Harvest September 25 to October 9, Eric Boissnot consultant.

The 2014 Grand-Puy-Lacoste has a much more approachable nose than usual, vibrant with red cherries, wild strawberry and cedar aromas, backed up with mineral-soaked blackberry fruit. This gathers momentum wonderfully in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin. The acidity is very well judged with purity and elegance on the finish, if not the structure or backbone commonly found is very top vintages. I've been a bit conservative with my score at the moment, but I am sure it will prove its worth with 3-5 more years in bottle, hence the plus sign. One to watch.

82% Cabernet Sauvignon, 18% Merlot. 33 hl/ha. Deep colour. Just beginning to open with the aid of aeration. Dark fruit with a slight vanilla edge. Medium-bodied, clean and fresh. Not quite the fruit weight of top years but firm, ripe tannins and attractive fruit. Won’t disappoint but more for medium-term ageing. (JL)

Mid crimson. An interestingly mixed aroma of fruit sweetness and leafy cassis notes, almost like a cassis fruit pastille. Firm but rounded tannins that finish dry. Harmonious and just fresh enough. (JH)
