Tasting Notes and Scores

98-99 JS

A complex, thought-provoking white. Vibrant and exciting with green herbs, stones and hints of aniseed and wet sea weed. Sea salt, too. It’s full-bodied and tight on the palate and rather shy. But then it takes off at the end and accelerates. Phenolic, with fine tannins. Iron. Oyster shell. 57% semillon and 43% sauvignon.

Gorgeous depth from first to last moment, nuanced, green apple, white pear, citrus, slate and gunsmoke, all beautifully drawn out through the palate, an impressive white that rises vertically. Harvest September 3 to 13. 44% new oak, with lees stirring once a week.

White wine of the vintage, huge depth, makes you want to stop and tell your friends. Citrus, slate, nuanced green apple, white pear, citrus, sage and gunsmoke, all beautifully drawn out through the palate, gorgeous depths from first to last moment, an impressive white that rises vertically. Harvest September 3 to 13. 44% new oak, with lees stirring once a week. 30hl/h yield because some vines impacted by frost. Jean-Philippe Delmas estate director.

I loved the 2021 Château Haut-Brion Blanc, and it's a candidate for the wine of the vintage. Incredibly pure notes of ripe golden fruits, citrus, white flowers, and a kiss of background spice and oak all define the aromatics, and it's medium to full-bodied on the palate, with both richness and freshness. It unquestionably plays in the fresher style of the vintage, yet this beauty brings ample mid-palate depth, a rich, layered texture, and awesome length. It’s a killer white that will evolve for 20-30 years if well stored.

The 2021 Haut-Brion Blanc has a wonderful bouquet of white peach, yellow plum, kumquat and white flower scents that opens beautifully in the glass, displaying lovely definition. The palate is very well balanced with a killer line of acidity that perfectly counterbalances the intense citrus fruit. Razor-sharp, more than any vintage that I have tasted in recent years. I often think that this is overrated at primeur, but the 2021 is undeniably a showstopping Haut-Brion Blanc. Neal Martin, Vinous, May 2022

A wine of tremendous stature and breed, the 2021 Haut-Brion Blanc possesses tremendous vertical energy allied to a feeling of structure that could easily be confused with that of a red wine. Lemon confit, marzipan, dried flowers and mint develop as the 2021 shows off its creaminess and breadth. The 2021 is an absolutely stunning wine by any measure.

The 2021 Haut-Brion Blanc is composed of 55% Semillon and 45% Sauvignon Blanc. It comes prancing out of the glass with flashy notes of green guava, fresh pineapple, and lemon tart, plus suggestions of orange blossoms and chalk dust and a waft of candle wax. Medium-bodied, the palate delivers electric tension with vibrant, tightly knit citrus and tropical fruit layers, leading to a very long, chalky finish on this beautiful wine. Only about 500 cases are produced, of which 150 are kept by the property for its own use.

Quite herbal and green on the nose, aromatic but intensely. Full and intense also on the palate, bright lemon and grapefruit, some bitter and spied touches too. Again like the red wine, Haut-Brion steps it up a notch in 2021 giving more body and richness than La Mission. Tangy, lively, upfront, tense but also direct, this has character and a flavour that lingers long after its left the mouth. A memorable wine in 2021. Structured and compact.

The 2021 Haut-Brion Blanc also shows considerable promise, offering up aromas of pink grapefruit, nectarine and crisp orchard fruits mingled with notions of freshly baked bread, pastry cream and beeswax. Full-bodied, fleshy and enveloping, it's satiny and seamless, with a broader-shoulders, more muscular profile than La Mission's white but similarly vibrant acids. At this early stage, this would appear to be one of the two or three finest Haut-Brion whites of the last 20 years.

The 2021 Blanc is a standout example of what this iconic estate is capable of producing, revealing a complex bouquet of pear, white peach, nectarine and spices. Full-bodied, round and fleshy with an enveloping core of fruit, it’s seamless and satiny, girdled by bright acids and framed by chalky, structuring dry extract.

17.5 JR

More opulent and aromatic than La Mission with a smoky, citrus-grapefruit edge. Aromatically more Sauvignon-led despite the dominance of Sémillon in the blend. Full and plush on the palate but still fresh and very, very long. (JL) 13.7%
