2008 Chateau Haut-Bailly Cru Classe, Pessac-Leognan

Colour: Red
Vintage: 2008
Region: Bordeaux, Pessac-Leognan
% Alcohol: 13.00

An estate that is at once both truly historic and very forward-thinking, under the ownership of the American Wilmers family and stewardship of Veronique Sanders, Haut Bailly has been producing wines of incredible quality for the past 10-15 years – although of course their history goes back way, way further than this. In fact the estate has some of the oldest vines, and one of the largest proportions of old vines, of any estate in the region. These old vines are all-important as the deep, complex root structures allows the vines to search out the rainwater left deep in the soils by winter and Spring rains, keeping the vines hydrated and fully operational even during hot dry summers.

Tasting Notes and Scores

95 RP

A brilliant effort for this vintage, yields were a mere 10 hectoliters per hectare in 2008 and the result is only 8,000 bottles produced. Opulent, fleshy and full-bodied, this wine has reigned in the excruciatingly high level of tannins, but the 15% alcohol gives it loads of glycerin as well as a chewy mouthfeel. Inky/purple-colored and super-concentrated with relatively civilized tannins, this stunning 2008 should be accessible in 3-5 years (atypical for Clos de Sarpe) and drink well for 30+.

Deep ruby in color, the wine is already starting to show secondary characteristics. Spice, tar, tobacco, leather, cedar, red fruits and wet forest notes create the nose. There is ample layers of ripe, fruit. On the palate the wine is full bodied, fresh and classic. The tannins are soft, but present, demanding another 5 years in the cellar for the wine to flesh out and soften from here. The quality is there, but at the moment, the wine is a bit on the strict side.

The 2008 Château Haut Bailly is brilliant and shows the purity and finesse-driven style of this estate beautifully. Pure Cabernet notes of blackcurrants, tobacco leaf, and gravelly minerality all emerge from this medium to full-bodied effort that has remarkable freshness and focus. At the early stages of its drinking plateau, enjoy it any time over the coming 10-15 years.

The 2008 Haut-Bailly, one of the longest harvests on record, has an impressive bouquet with gorgeous blackberry, briary, rose petal and bay leaf aromas. This is very delineated and focused. The palate is well balanced with fine-boned tannins. The acidity lends edginess and tension. The finish is cohesive and harmonious with lightly spiced black fruit, tobacco and clove. This is a lovely, understated but classy 2008. Tasted at the Haut-Bailly vertical at the château.

Haut-Bailly has upped the intensity a little in recent years, and although that has rightly won it plaudits, this makes me feel a little nostalgic for the days when it really did go for extremely restrained elegance. It needs time in the glass, as the tannins are still fully tight rather than caressing, and I suggest another year or two before attacking it. Spicy notes unfurl over the palate, with cassis, gentle cedar, and some menthol on the finish. One to really savour. Drinking Window 2020 - 2035
