2010 Chateau Haut-Bailly Cru Classe, Pessac-Leognan

Colour: Red
Vintage: 2010
Region: Bordeaux, Pessac-Leognan
% Alcohol: 14.00

An estate that is at once both truly historic and very forward-thinking, under the ownership of the American Wilmers family and stewardship of Veronique Sanders, Haut Bailly has been producing wines of incredible quality for the past 10-15 years – although of course their history goes back way, way further than this. In fact the estate has some of the oldest vines, and one of the largest proportions of old vines, of any estate in the region. These old vines are all-important as the deep, complex root structures allows the vines to search out the rainwater left deep in the soils by winter and Spring rains, keeping the vines hydrated and fully operational even during hot dry summers.

Tasting Notes and Scores

98 RP

Deep plum/purple, Haut-Bailly’s 2010 required some coaxing to appreciate its subtle notes of barbecue smoke, lead pencil shavings and creme de cassis as well as its touches of pomegranate and forest floor. The oak is pushed far into the background and the tannins are extremely silky, but the intensity of the wine is profound and the finish lingers for close to 55 seconds. This wine is ripe yet delicate, powerful yet stylish, and essentially resembles a remarkable fashion design from a house of haute couture. This wine needs a good 7-8 years of bottle age and should keep for 40-50+ years. RP

This quintessential example of pure finesse, elegance, harmony and delicacy is combined into a wine that lingers intensely with near-perfect poise and character. Haut-Bailly’s ethereal character is virtually unmatched in Bordeaux. Normally, general manager/winemaker Veronique Sanders fashions a blend that approximates 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 37% Merlot and the rest Cabernet Franc. That was the exact blend of her 2009, and I doubt the 2010 deviates significantly from that.

Great aromas of crushed blackberries with flowers and stones that follow through to a full body, with super silky tannins and a long, long finish. It fills your mouth with beautiful fruit and velvety tannins yet shows tension and form. This lasts for minutes on the palate. Structured and superb. Don't touch until 2020.

Still fairly youthful in appearance with light bricking on the rim, the 2010 Haut-Bailly has an intoxicating nose that is in full flight: a mélange of red and black fruit, loam, truffle, just a touch of powdered dark chocolate and then gaminess developing with aeration. The aromatics have a slightly melted quality that I associate more with the 2009s. The palate shows impressive weight and poise, the acidity effortlessly counterbalancing the ripe fruit, and hints of brown spice, meat juices and Provençal herbs coming through with time. There is a sense of completeness about this Haut-Bailly that is completely disarming. What a fabulous wine.

Good deep ruby-red. Musky aromas of black raspberry, plum, mocha, smoke, minerals, earth and sexy oak. Then penetrating, dry and classic in the mouth, with outstanding sap and grip to its powerful, savory flavors of strawberry, raspberry, smoke, dark chocolate and spices. Impeccably balanced wine with outstanding depth and extract; really spreads out horizontally to saturate the palate. Finishes with extremely fine-grained tannins and great subtlety of fruit. I look forward to watching this outstanding Haut-Bailly unwind over the next 20 years.

Cru Classe Pessac-Leognan (50% harvest, 32hl/ha, 13.9%) [62CS/36M/2CF] Dense, ripe and minerally to smell; rich, dense, tannic and vital wine, a fine long term balance; very ripe fruit and crisp acidity combined; long and tasty and mineral across the palate; deep and dense, but not heavy, with a velvety feel to the fine textured tannins, and great aromatic length. Classy and complex, and retaining its characteristic grace in spite of its size. An unusually powerful, splendid long term (make no mistake!) Haut Bailly. 2022-40 [M.Schuster, Bordeaux Mar/Apr 2011]

Every bit as good yet in a dramatically different style, the 2010 Château Haut-Bailly has a more chiseled, focused, inward style to go with the essence of Haut-Bailly-like aromatics of sweet red and black fruit, smoked tobacco, graphite, and crushed stone, with just a hint of background minty herbs. It's full-bodied, perfectly balanced, has flawless tannins, and a rare mix of power, elegance, and purity. It blossoms with air, and while certainly mature, it has another 2-3 decades of overall longevity ahead of it. Nov 2023
