2014 Chateau Haut-Bailly Cru Classe, Pessac-Leognan

Colour: Red
Vintage: 2014
Region: Bordeaux, Pessac-Leognan
% Alcohol: 13.00

An estate that is at once both truly historic and very forward-thinking, under the ownership of the American Wilmers family and stewardship of Veronique Sanders, Haut Bailly has been producing wines of incredible quality for the past 10-15 years – although of course their history goes back way, way further than this. In fact the estate has some of the oldest vines, and one of the largest proportions of old vines, of any estate in the region. These old vines are all-important as the deep, complex root structures allows the vines to search out the rainwater left deep in the soils by winter and Spring rains, keeping the vines hydrated and fully operational even during hot dry summers.

Tasting Notes and Scores

96 AG

The 2014 Haut-Bailly has turned out beautifully. Dark, sumptuous and expressive, the 2014 exudes depth and finesse. Ample and resonant on the palate, with striking depth, the 2014 possesses exceptional balance and class. Hints of smoke, tobacco and licorice infuse the deep, creamy finish. Tasted Feb 2017

Surprisingly open, the wine already the start of secondary nuances, softness to the tannins and development on the palate. And this is a good thing because the fruit is ripe, texturally, the wine is soft, medium/full-bodied and refined, with a tightly wound, vibrance to the wine, giving you lift and sensuality. Young and fun to taste, it is clearly not quite ready. Wait until at least 2024 before pulling a cork.

The 2014 Château Haut Bailly is a beauty and shows the best of the vintage in its charming, forward, complex bouquet of black cherries, kirsch, dried flowers, and black raspberries, with just a hint of building earthy minerality and tobacco. Pure silk on the palate, with medium to full body, ripe, present tannins, and a great mid-palate, it’s a rock star 2014 to enjoy over the coming two decades or so.

Concentrated depths to the fruit, with a silky texture that is striking. Cool blueberry and blackcurrant fruit, along with high floral aromatics, speaks to a summer that was cooler than ideal but one that followed by a beautiful September that allowed for full ripening. This is still extremely young and pretty much in its dumb phase right now, as those tannins close in around the fruit, but with huge promise for the future. I would give it another three or four years before getting going, or ensure a long carafing. Drinking Window 2024 - 2040

The 2014 Haut-Bailly has a very attractive bouquet. Blackberry, raspberry, rose petals, tobacco and incense are well defined and very focused. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, a fine bead of acidity, fresh and focused with a very harmonious and elegant finish. This is beginning to drink beautifully now and will continue to meliorate. Superb. Tasted at the Haut-Bailly vertical at the château. Tasted June 2021
