Chateau Haut-Brion Premier Cru Classe, Pessac-Leognan

Colour: Red
Vintage: 1998
Region: Bordeaux, Pessac-Leognan
% Alcohol: 13.00

One of the four original 1st Growths in the 1855 classification (along with Lafite, Margaux and Latour) Haut Brion has always ranked as one of the most desirable wines in the world. Its story, since 1855, has been quite incredible including a series of disasters that plagued the vineyards during the second half of the 19th century and occupation by German forces during WWII. In fact, during the war, Haut Brion served as a rest home for Luftwaffe pilots. Owned by the Dillon family since 1934, the style of Haut Brion has changed over the years. During the '50s and early '60s the wines were rich, earthy and almost sweet, giving way to a much leaner, simplistic style of claret from 1966 to 1974. Since 1975 we have witnessed a return to the richer more complex style which many people know and love today. Haut Brion is stylistically unique amongst the 1st Growths and has always been very much the connoisseurs choice, often undervalued when compared to its illustrious piers in Pauillac and Margaux. The credit must duly be given the incredible work carried out by Jean Delmas who administered Haut Brion from 1961-2003, producing some of the greatest wines in living memory. His son, Jean-Philippe Delmas, has since picked up the baton and continues to carry on with his father's great work; beginning with the astonishing 2005, Haut Brion have hardly put a foot wrong achieving multiple 100-point scores from across the leading critics.

Just when you think this wine could not get any better, 2 years later, it seems to have developed more richness, complexity, and vibrancy. The full-bodied, rich, concentrated wine offers endless waves of dark red fruits, smoke, cigar box, cedar, tar, leather, and campfire aromatics. Rich, intense, balanced, fresh, and refined, if you have the extra money hanging around, this is the Haut Brion to buy today. Drink from 2022-2060. Tasted Nov 2022

Agreeably approachable, with plump, plummy fruit aromas and accents of blackberry, spice and smoke. The texture is rich and round, with a supple, fleshy feel and suave tannins supporting the wine without astringency. The wine drinks well now while still seeming youthful and fresh, and there is enough substance to suggest that it will age admirably for years to come. There is a strong dominance of Merlot in the blend (59%), and the wine aged in 77% new oak casks until bottling in August of 2000. Drinking Window: 2023 - 2045

The 1998 Haut Brion has long been a favourite vintage of mine and consumed with pleasure several times. Now at 20-years of age I feel it is one step ahead of the 1998 La Mission: there is great fruit intensity with almost precocious blackberry, raspberry coulis, pastilles, tobacco and hints of olive. It has exquisite delineation and focus. The palate is medium-bodied with fuller in the mouth than the La Mission: deeper fruit (blackberry, mulberry and a touch of strawberry) intermingling with sage, cedar and a touch of hung game. It is not quite as precocious or as glossy on the finish as I remember previous bottles, but it is certainly turning into one of the finest wines of this vintage. Tasted at the château.

For my money (and I have some in the cellar), the 1998 Haut-Brion is the finest vintage from this estate between 1989 and 2000, surpassing the 1990. While it remains decidedly youthful at age 25, it is beginning to stir, unfurling in the glass with aromas of dark berry fruit, cigar wrapper, loamy soil, pencil shavings and burning embers. Medium-bodied, deep and concentrated, it's layered and elegant, with refined tannins, lively acids and a long, perfumed finish. Exemplifying the ideal of intensity without weight, it enjoys a slight edge over La Mission Haut-Brion in this banner year for both properties. 100pts WK Dec 2023
As reported over the last two years, this is a prodigious Haut-Brion. It exhibits a dense ruby/purple color in addition to a tight, but incredibly promising nose of smoke, earth, minerals, lead pencil, black currants, cherries, and spice. This full-bodied wine unfolds slowly, but convincingly on the palate, revealing a rich, multi-tiered, stunningly pure, symmetrical style with wonderful sweetness, ripe tannin, and a finish that lasts for nearly 45 seconds. It tastes like liquid nobility. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2035.
