Chateau Lafite Rothschild Premier Cru Classe, Pauillac

Colour: Red
Vintage: 1990
Region: Bordeaux, Pauillac
% Alcohol: 12.50

Lafite Rothschild is, without a doubt, one of the most powerful brands in the wine world. Heralded as the king among kings, this First Growth enjoys a global reputation for quality and prestige and was even purchased by Thomas Jefferson, third President of the United States. With its vinegrowing history going back centuries, the property passed from the Segur family into the Rothschild family before coming into the hands of Baron James d’Rothschild in 1868. The wine itself is hugely impressive in every respect. It is one of the longest lived still wines, hugely complex when mature and massively sought after; arguably their special ‘8’ labelled bottling of the 2008 vintage was one of the key moments in the explosion of the fine wine scene in Asia and the property continues to enjoy this legacy today. However exceptional work by the current management has focused on making sure Lafite remains a wine for all collectors and lovers of great wine. Having taken over winemaking duties from Charles Chevalier, Saskia de Rothschild, alongside General Manager Jean-Guillaume Prats, make a formidable team and Lafite has a very confident future still ahead of it.

Saturated deep red. Shoe polish, minerals and cassis on the nose, with a hint of toasty oak. Intensely flavored, vibrant fruit shows great middle-palate fullness for a young Lafite. Very long, multidimensional finish of great subtlety. Has the acidity and tannic underpinning for long life. An outstanding, classic Lafite; claret for the millennium. Along with Latour, an early candidate for Medoc of the vintage.

Interestingly, a bottle of 1990 Lafite Rothschild I pulled from my cellar for a video blog on my web site was still buttoned down, tight, and even with extended decanting was not showing as much as I would have hoped. However, a bottle tasted, of all places, in Seoul, Korea in February, was only a few points short of perfection. That amazing performance motivated me to pull another bottle out of my cellar and follow it over the course of two days. Sure enough, by the second day the wine was roaring from the glass. The 1990 Lafite has turned out far better than my early assessment. While it still possesses some firmness, and performs like a late adolescent in terms of its evolution, it boasts gorgeous aromas of cedar, tobacco leaf, cassis, and lead pencil shavings. The explosive aromas are followed by a fleshy, full-bodied wine that should hit its peak in 5-8 years, and last for 25-30 more.

This is an elegant, balanced Lafite that remains mouthwatering and juicy on the finish. It is not the most immediately impressive of the 1990 firsts, but then when does Lafite ever try to shout the loudest? Instead, it is all about a quiet but relentless building of layers, with brambled black fruits, graphite, cold ash and soft leather alongside a spicier rosemary and clove edging. Gilbert Rokvam was the technical director at this time, working with owner Baron Eric de Rothschild. Harvest began on September 13, and the scorching summer temperatures were compared by the property to 1947 and 1949. Drinking Window: 2021 - 2038

Very serious fruit, with juicy berry, tobacco and cedar character. Slightly more body than the 1989, but they are very close in character. I would give this a little more time. '89/'90 Bordeaux non-blind horizontal.

Firm, reticent, classic-styled Pauillac with loads of spicy red, crisp currants, cedar, tobacco, cigar box, herbs, and forest leaves. The fruit is crunchy and the tannins are a bit on the rustic side. If you are seeking an old-school, classic with a green edge, you are going to like this more than I did. Drink from 2023-2050. This bottle of 1990 Lafite-Rothschild replicates the one poured at the château several months earlier. The bouquet offers black fruit, a little dustiness, leather and light marine notes, but again, it never slips into fifth gear. It just lacks vivacity. The palate is medium-bodied with slightly hard tannin, modest fruit concentration and a monochromatic finish that feels suppressed by that summer’s warmth. To reiterate, there are Super Seconds that clearly outperform this First Growth in 1990. Tasted at Noble Rot's “Xmas” dinner. Dec 2019
